Anybody hear about a spectator walking out and taking down some riders? Anybody have details?
No, but some guy in a car drove around the orange pylons, while talking on his cell phone, and drove right into the course. I swerved/slammed on the brakes in disbelief and thought for sure I was going over the hood. He looked up and stopped at the last possible second, and then, get this, flipped ME off! All in all an excellent race however, and except for that asshole I thought the traffic and crowd control was great.
.
Yes, a kid ran out into the street and was hit by a cyclist. Both the child and cyclist were injured. I was riding the course backwards as a spectator and came upon the incident moments after it occured. The child appeared badly hurt, but was being tended to by her parents and other adults so I did not intervene. I tended to the cyclist who had a dripping gash in her elbow and a bent derailleur and rubbing brake. She wanted to proceed so I got her bike operational again and found her a rag for her arm, but the police had arrived by that time and they would not let her proceed despite her insistence that she wanted to proceed and that she was in the midst of a race. The police seemed unconcerned about her injuries but were much more concerned about her personal information and locating the serial number on her bike. In the meantime an ambulance appeared and the woman refused medical attention and she was allowed to proceed on with the race. She has posted to the St. Anthony’s forum that she did not complete the race but did make it to T2 and was tended to by paramedics there and received stitches. The child was loaded onto the ambulance and taken away. Hopefully she is alright, although she left behind a decent sized pool of blood in the road and did not stop screaming the entire 15 minutes I was on scene. Thank God there was a bike race going on, because if she had run into that 4 lane road when traffic was allowed in that lane, the news would likely be much worse.
Yeah–That could have been brutal. Fortunately the guy on the bike wasn’t going very fast.
