According to an e-mail received by SRAM dealers at 17:05 hrs. EST, the following information is in effect:
(copied from e-mail)
“SRAM, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced a voluntary recall of the SRAM 10-Speed Chain Powerlock connector links. They discovered the Powerlock connector plate could crack during installation or early use, causing loss of bicycle control and possible injury. For this reason, SRAM is recalling and replacing all affected SRAM 10-Speed Chain Powerlock connector links.”
Note that the prescribed protocol to participate in the recall is to visit your local authorized SRAM dealer (almost every bike shop).
Just a heads up - the CPSC data above is from a 1998 recall, and is NOT related to the current recall. I have a PC1090 chain purchased in April of this year that has an affected PowerLock (luckily I also have a spare that is not affected), and I just received an email from the vendor that I purchased that chain from.
The information that I received states:
• Carefully inspect both sides of the PowerLock connecting link for a date code letter (A, B, C, D, etc)
• Date codes “M” and “N” are part of this recall. Date codes other than “M” or “N” are not affected

Thanks
I was going to ask did they actually make 10 speed chains in 1997-98?
Didn’t think so.
