i mean, why reinvent the cassette? why reinvent STI-style shifters and do it as a double-tap system with only one paddle?

i think the answer is, because some things can be vastly improved.

With Steel you should be able to make a pretty high pressure press fit. I imagine where sould be some pins to keep it from torquing

There are valid resaons for the Brake shifter and Cass, i can’t think of one for the bar end shifters, other than to do something different for the sake of being different.

As far as I can tell, the one paddle SRAM system is not a vast improvement over STI style shifters.

There are improvements that are actually improvements, like STI versus downtube shifters, and there are mere changes.

If you don’t have a problem with the current TT shifters, and you don’t have even have an idea what type of improvement you want, you’re just looking for a mere change for the sake of change.

ah, who knows, looking at it again it sure looks like it’s been welded and then machined back down. don’t see any press fit seams or anything. okay enough looking at this crazy cassette, i need to do some work!

well, while i appreciate your perspective, but i can think of many.

to start off, if you’ve been mountain biking for as many years as i have, you may remember thumb shifters: simple, crude, on top of the bar ‘bolt-on’ indexed (and un-indexed) shifters, push one way to get shifts, pull back the other way (as best you can) to shift back.

comparing the function of those dinosaurs to current shimano mountain bike, under the bar, ergonomically placed, push-push, XT trigger shifters, is like comparing a model T with a Lexus: night and day.

As far as I can tell, the one paddle SRAM system is not a vast improvement over STI style shifters.

There are improvements that are actually improvements, like STI versus downtube shifters, and there are mere changes.

If you don’t have a problem with the current TT shifters, and you don’t have even have an idea what type of improvement you want, you’re just looking for a mere change for the sake of change.

There are some advantaged the one paddle. Internally frame has far far far less moving parts than a shimano or campy shifter. They also make it possible to shift from the drops with your hand wrapped around it. That more of an advantage for sprinter types in a roadrace. It’s also led to a better hood shape for some people.

well, as far as* I* can tell, from using the SRAM shifters, while not perfect yet, i’d say that many elements of the SRAM levers are pretty big improvements over both STI and ergo shifters.

What problems with TT bar-end shifters do you think need to be solved? Or at least, what improvements would you like to see?

From what I gather; the back plate is an aluminum insert, and is press fit (presumably in a keyed manner) to the front cogs. I’m interested in seeing the production items and some reviews.

but one problem with the current endshifters as tt shifters: having to move your hands quite far over the far end of the aerobar extensions to execute shifts.

vs. having a light-touch, spring-loaded trigger or paddle shifter already set very close to your hand position.

and probably 10 more improvements i can’t even think of. i wouldn’t have thought of all of shimano’s improvements to older mountain bike thumb shifters. but i cannot deny that the current trigger shifters are far superior in ergonomics and function.

Being over the end has never been a problem for me, my hands are up there anyways. The SRAM levers have a better throw than the Shimano in that area. The thumbshifter are a bit unfair, That’s more like comparing downtube shifters and STI. In reality have used all the versions of shimano rapid fire, 3 versions of grip shift and the sram triggers, i’ver never seen any of them as a massive advancement in technology. The trigger shifters from both shimano and SRAM have just been refinements of the same idea. The one massive departure, mutlicontrol levers sunk like a lead brick.

Frankly, I think your one stated reason is pretty silly. Waaa, the shifter is all the way out there at the END of the aero bar I’m holding onto!

As to the 10 other improvements you can’t even think of, that’s my point. You can’t even think of what needs improved, but the design is sooo old.

There’s only one improvement I’ve heard mentioned that makes real sense, and that’s the ability to shift from the aero bars *and *the base bars.

exactly my point. the current SRAM endshifter is a joke of basically no improvements of a 30+ year design, except following the carbon bandwagon.

That is cool. The entire carrier is simply… gone.

I would really like to try the new bar-end shifters/brake levers. We had one set: Gone instantly.

Am I the only one that isn’t impressed? Big deal, another cassette. As long as I have one on my bike and I can ride I don’t care. Why reinvent the wheel?

I’ll take a stab at the manufacturing of the cassette. It is really not too difficult of a job to do with 3 axis machines. To make it from 1 pc, here’s a method that should work. Chuck up round stock the cnc lathe, face off what is to be the small cog of the cassette, hog out the minor diameter of the I.D. spline all the way through to the largest cog, turn o.d. stepping it down to the outside dia. of each cog, use grooving tool to cut the spacer width between cogs, similar op. for the bevel on the cogs, take a relieved tool in the I.D. and gut out the inside, part the cassette off the bar behind the largest cog.

3-axis mill -Throw the cassette on a spud/fixture with the large cog down, take a tool similar to a keyway cutter and cut the valleys in the cog teeth, similar op for the spotfaces needed for shifting, run a steel brush over to deburr.

The I.D. spline that goes on the hub/freewheel can’t be milled due to sharp corners, use the bore that was done in the lathe to pilot a broach.

To make one part in my shop would be about $475. To run these in taiwan, you are looking at about 1-2 hours when tooled up at @$12.00/hour, $2 for material and $1 for heat treat.

If it’s made of 2 pcs, that’s not really much different and I don’t see how it poses a problem since both parts are keyed to the free hub and the nut holds them together as would a standard cassette.
