My sram red front derailleur will not shift to the big ring. I’ll get it perfect in the stand, then hop on for a ride, it will shift perfect and smooth about twice. Then it won’t shift at all. I’ve repeated tuning it over and over, as soon as I ride it it won’t shift up. I’ve brought it to a shop, same thing. Mechanic says it’s good, as soon as I give it a test, 2 or 3 good shifts. The. Boom, won’t shift. Has anyone had a similar problem? This is driving me nuts.
Is the cable slipping?
Is the cable slipping?
When was the last time you replaced the cable? It may be stretching, slipping… Be sure the derailleur is functioning properly as well by hand, meaning no grime or dirt and not seizing by chance.
There could be a kink in the cable somewhere. Or your limit screws need adjusting but if you say a mechanic looked at it and you tuned it repeatedly then I think we can rule out limit screws and go with the cable not having full tension, has slack somewhere, or is not travelling smoothly through your cable housing. Sram Red Front derailleurs usually should be really reliable and easy to adjust, they are rarely problematic especially the newer ones but i’ve seen even the best equipment fail so can’t rule that out. What bike is this on?
The First generation Sram red front deralleurs are junk so if your bike has one, throw it away and get a Shimano dura ace deraillure.
It’s on a Canndondale Super Six.
Agreed. Sram Red is good from 2013+. Shimano Dura Ace components are always just great stuff. So tough, snappy and reliable plus the finish is always so clean… One to none. Not to go off topic but Dura ace 9000 55t crank still the best crank i’ve ridden thus far…

Or get a Red Yaw FD. Easier to set up than the DA 9000 FD.
The first Red FDs had a titanium cage that flexed too much. My wife had one on her bike. Terrible shifting. I put a Red Yaw on it and it works great. I have a Force Yaw on mine are the shifting is also great.
I have a Red Yaw FD on my road bike and put a Force YAW FD on my girlfriend’s road bike. Both work flawlessly. I had a Shimano 9000 FD on my tri-bike and replaced it with the 7900 FD (easier to work with and keep in adjustment).
