I have read some previous threads. Some people are still having flexing problems with SRAM front derailluers for 2011? Is that true? SRAM hasn’t fixed that yet? I am looking to buy SRAM, and will go Force if this is still an issue for 2010/11 models.
I wish SRAM would give an option of the Red FD with the force cage as seen on many of the pro tour bikes. You can use a Force but it doesn’t match (I don’t care, but some people do)

FWIW I’ve never had an issue with the FD cage flexing and causing shifting issues. Not once in 4 years and on 3 different bikes.
I have one of the first gen Red FD and I experience some shifting problems when going from the big to small chainring small to big.
No problems with mine
.
same here, never had any issues
but, just to be safe, I’m using a chain guide (so the chain can’t drop on the frame when going on the small ring).
They do make one with a steel cage. I think they have been available for a while but are not on the Sram website. I am able to order the older anodized color one. The “Black” version is still on watch at the moment but will be around soon I would guess.

aren’t those the only options?
I will have some complete SRAM RED “Black” groups for sale with the steel cage front deraileurs. Keep watch on the classifieds.

Do we know if the problem is more endemic to clamp- or braze-on types?
If you’ve had problems, please list here your FD type.
Sent you a PM.
I wouldn’t imagine that the style of clam has much to do with it. I thought it was the lack of stiffness in the cage that was the culprit of poor shifting(?).
I’ve been helping a friend deal with his ‘braze-on’ RED FD. In the end, he just got a Force FD and has been happy ever since.
As a side note, I’ve never had more difficulties adjusting / tuning a FD as I did with a SRAM FD and R2C shifters (on a Cervelo P3). Getting the tension just right on the cable was a PITA. I think that it’s in large part due to the indexed shifting. In comparison, setting up my own bikes with a Shimano set up was simple!
Just installed a full 2012 Red group, no shifting issues.
I will agree that you won’t have issues if you have it adjusted properly. I will say that when my limit screw mysteriously stripped on my Red FD and I replaced it with a Force FD the shifting was noticeably more “crisp”.

If Garmin Cervelo’s Tom Danielson is any indication - you might want a non-red FD… and a shimano chain and shimano cassette- even though Garmin is sponsored by SRAM.
