Square Lake Half in Minnesota?

I’m looking for a midwest half-distance race in September, and a friend pointed out the Square Lake half. It’s inexpensive and looks like a “local” scale race. I’ve done Pigman (in Iowa) a couple of times for the same kind of cost range, and it’s a great race. If you told me this was a “Minnesota Pigman”, I’d be set. (Yes, there are other options, like Branson and Rev3, but this is both cheaper and closer to me than either of those.)

What do you all know about this Square Lake?

Thanks!

Great venue. Not well managed (although it seems to have gotten better as of late). The RD’s reputation (or, the reputation of his races, I guess) isn’t exactly stellar.

As said above, the RD isn’t the greatest, but its a good course. Distances may be off a little either way, but I did the sprint last year and it was a good course, plenty of rolling hills to keep you on your toes. The lake is awesome for swimming, spring fed, so its very clear, and a good temp for a wetsuit.

I am debating doing this one as my long race for the year since I will be in the middle of training for the TC marathon at the same time.

I was told there is a new RD this year for Square Lake. I would expect it to be run well this year.

Hard to be worse. But as others have said…be prepared to run/ride/swim more or less than the purported distances. I think they’ve managed to keep everyone on course the last couple years (one year, folks ended up in Stillwater), but no guarantee that course is accurate.
