Sprint tri--tri tank or no tank?

so i have this sprint tri coming up this weekend and, since it is only 5 days away, i’m already thinking of the perfect outfit (please sense the sarcasm). i’m curious as to what you guys wear for sprint tri’s (6-800m swim, 10-15mile bike, 5-8k run). i bought a new LG tri tank off of ebay and am planning on wearing it at muncie later this summer, so i figured this would be a good test. i don’t want to take it to the pool b/c LG stuff doesn’t typically hold up well in chlorine, so this would be the ideal testing ground. just curious how the rest of the world does it and what their reasons are. thanks guys.

I think in most Tri’s a top is mandatory, so that’s not really an option. Check with the race director so you don’t get DQed for something stupid.

" I think in most Tri’s a top is mandatory,…"

Is this a USAT rule? I’ve been racing tri’s bare-chested for 11 years and haven’t gotten penalized yet. But I don’t want to start now…

No this is not a USAT rule. It is often a race rule. In particular, it is a rule at M Dot races.

If there is no wetsuit on the swim, I would opt for no top in most situations, if it is legal. It is just too tough to get a top on when wet. If there is a wetsuit swim, I wear a top under the suit. It works well.

point of clarification–the sprint tri i’m referring to has no dress code as far as tops go–i did a race put on by the same people last year and, along with half the participants, wore no top (half being most of the men). my interests lie in whether you guys will take gel in a short race, and if so i imagine a race top helping (compared to taping something to the top tube or a bento box–i don’t need that much). no, it won’t make that much difference–at least i think not. do tri tops help/hurt during the swim? also, do your tri tops fit tight as hell? it’s the right size, but damn that’s tight!! thanks again!

You won’t need a gel for this race… I assume you’ll have some sort of sports drink on the bike?

yeah, i’ll have a sports drink. i usually take down 1/2 gel in these short races. it might be me overcompensating for the fact that i absolutely died at gulf coast last year due to poor nutrition. so the important part i left out is: do chicks dig the tri tanks? (assuming you’re not rolling out of them)

Gulf Coast is a 1.2 IM right? Apples and oranges… nutrition should be a non-issue in a sprint race. My vote: go bare chested (depending on physique it seems like that would be better for the chicks
