Sprint race upper 50's (F) 50% chance of rain need tips

My second race is Sunday. Same course as last years first tri. Weather is not looking good. Any tips / suggustions / advice for dealing with the rain? I think i will be producing enough internal heat the temp should not be an issue. about 0.5 miles of the run is on a trial so I think it will be muddy. Am thinking about ditching the running shoes and using some trail shoes that are waterproof.

Any other advice is welcome.

Don’t you hate mid-August in the northeast? I was just telling my wife that today’s run felt like a nice fall day. Summers done.

Tip-wise… HTFU.

carry a disposable shower cap on you just in case you feel yourself in serious trouble temperature wise. Will do wonders in a pinch, sort of like those foil space blankets at the finish, may not be too big of an issue for a shorter distance race though.

Have a plan for post race that includes a towel, dry cloths, new socks and some nice comfy waterproof shoes. maybe a flask of hot coffee also?

Thanks Brad… I think I did today…

Just as our wave went off for the swim, the rain resumed. Threw off my prescription glass at the end of the 1st loop on the bike, went sockless (with new running shoes… the blisters are not to bad)… Finished about 9 minutes faster than last year…

So I am a bit Harder now.

“Summers done.”

Whatever. Not complaining…I wouldn’t trade this for fall.

Honestly, with those conditions for a sprint, only thing I’d do different is put neoprene toe warmers on the bike shoes. Doesn’t cost any time and keeps the toes a little warmer. A little cooler, I might go with gloves or arm warmers. Even fingerless gloves can help a little and are easier to get on wet hands than full fingered. Regarding running shoes, use the usual race shoes. You would hate the trail shoes on the paved portion of the run and it won’t be that big a deal running in the mud for 1/2 mile.

Edit: just realized I was a little late with the advice. oh well. hope you had fun!

Dev, nicely done. 9 minutes in a Sprint? Nice. Sockless in new shoes? Also, nice…
I am hardly the person to judge the level of HTFU-ness, but you can always sleep well after one of those races…

Hey, I spend a lot of time in MI. Any good Tri’s coming up on the east side? Clinton Township / 18 mile road area?
