Spot's IMLP RR

Interesting question, but I don’t think so. I had no issues with my Kalibur at Rockman, and I did a 102 mile ride a month ago, most of it in the aero position.

We’re having a great family vacation…the boys are getting very antsy in our hotel room as we are about to head to the Vemont Teddy Bear Factory.

Look forward to getting in some rides with you guys over the rest of the summer.

Well, as my experience shows, you are certainly right. I feel like I am still a relative newbie to IM length, and am still learning what my body needs to go the distance.

Bummer to hear about the DNF. Hydration/nutrition/electrolytes seem a tough nut to crack. Glad you’ve got a cavalier attitude- good luck in the next! Cool meeting you @ Rockman.

My wife thought pretty much the same thing about the book in terms of it being a little “confused”.

**here’s a hint, take it off and swim without it  **Its pretty obvious you have never seen my act in the water with this comment…I need all the help I can get!

Legs are still sore, but getting better, thanks for asking!

Hey Rod…

Rockman was nothing compared to what I looked like when the ambulance finally hauled my ass away. It was not good.

How do you handle the logistics of the Infinit on an IM course? Do you have baggies of powder or something with you? How do you remix on the fly?

Spot

well, your story is more traumatic reading it then what you told me over the phone!
dang, you went through alot out there!

you did the right thing stopping and accepting help! that could have turned truly dire had you not done so.

i second roof, in calling MIke at Infinit. Lord knows i’ve nagged you about that stuff for about 2 years now, so hopefully this is enough to have you try it out. i bet you’ll never want to experience those cramps ever again!

glad you’re on the mend now, and enjoying time with the fam. there is a big wide world outside of Ironman, sounds like you can choose some other things now and have alot to look forward to. yeah, babe.

oh, come on out to ride with us! we’ll ride into the Fall when it’s really beautiful, etc, you would dig that. (yes, they ride into winter too…but…eek)

Yeah, that has been discussed ad nauseum here. I don’t do what most do - I have a front aero drink full and 2 bottles. That gets me through the first 1/2. I then go with GEF for the rest. I have another bottle at special needs if I feel I need (haven’t stopped at a special needs station in my last 2 IMs though). They do have the new single packets that I’m going to take/try this year. Others make a thick “slurry” and dilute it on the fly. I may try that this year because of the likely heat/humidity of IMLou.

You definitely want to get this figured out as LP is about the easiest of races as far as weather goes. See you this summer on some rides?

Hi spot, for Infinit, I have 2 bottles per loop each with 600 calories. I can drink this “as is”. If it is hotter, I supplement with water, or if I think my calorie needs are higher, I can have Gatorade off course, gels or a powerbar. If it is cool, the 4 bottles with some water is what I go with. No messing around and getting out of the aero position mixing stuff and losing time.

I too had 2 bottles of Infinit per loop (each with fortified electrolytes thanks to Michael Folen). I supplemented the Infinit with 1 bottle of Gatorade Endurance per loop–which has a good electrolyte profile, but fewer calories than Infinit. Periodically ate Cliff Blocks and a few chunks of Cliff bars packed in my Bento box. Picked up 2 bottles of water per loop to dilute the sports drinks, digest solids, and wash salt from my face and hair. The water helped to keep me cool, too. I was diligent at keeping my absorption rate high. My focus was to keep my effort level and HR in high Zone 1/low Zone 2 for the entire bike so that my stomach and intestines could absorb calories. My limited experience has been that if I work too hard, drink fluids with high osmolality (Cytomax or Enervit), or drink/eat things that don’t agree with me–these systems don’t function well.

I tried to keep my focus off time goals, splits, etc. by randomly resetting my stop watch and bike computer. Worked well and I really had great experience the entire race. As a first time IM’er, I’d say that keeping my focus on perceived effort, HR, and nutrition was a strategy that worked well for me. Not sure if I ever want to throw pacing into the mix, yet.

Yeah, I definitely want to meet up with you guys this summer. Will probably go easy this weekend on the bike, just a couple easy 20 milers or something. Might do Great Buckeye just for grins…

well, i think that says alot if you already want to get back on your bike like this! that is pretty good! after my IM i plan on sitting on my ass for a nice little minute. lol…

I have eaten like a pig since last Sunday, and haven’t twitched a muscle other than to heft a beer to my beerhole. I really feel fat and gross at the moment. I need to get on the bike and burn some calories. Plus I’m looking forward to just getting some nice easy miles in on my road bike.
