Sponsor protocol

Ok, so for 09, I have a few sponsors, one of which is discount based only. What I am curious is that if others when getting the race suit screen printed also would treat sponsors that give them “stuff” or give them a discount differently in terms of money you have to put out or such. Trying to word this to not sound like a dick.

EDIT: At what point with a sponsor, do you feel you should pay to get their logo/name put on your jersey? Do you feel a discount deal is a sponsorship?

Trying to word this to not sound like a dick.

Try to word it so that we understand you.

At the point you told them you would. Not before, and not missing after.

Better…

What is your sponsor getting from giving you a discount? Are you bringing people into their store and helping them out by selling stuff? Are you promoting their brand via word of mouth and personal recommendation? Are you putting their logo on your race kit? I would guess that some sort of an agreement was reached regarding what they would do for you and what you would do for them. While I assume that it wasn’t specifically spelled out that you would be responsible for paying to have their name/logo emblazoned on your kit, if promising them exposure was part of the deal then you should pony up for what you’ve agreed to do.

They aren’t giving you a discount because they’re such nice guys and want to help you out - they expect something in return. Make sure that you give it to them.

They didnt ask me to put their logo on, I have other ones I was about to do and debating on theirs as well. Its shoes and clothing at a discount for the company, more for marketing I would guess, oddly they werent specific about what they expect. I would expect, to represent them in the community and get their product out there for people to see.

If you are not contractually bound some way to them to put the logo on or to your other sponsors to keep it off, you can do whatever you want.

If you are willing to put their logo on but not sure what to do, this would be a great opportunty to talk to them and in the process deepen your relationship with them. Heck, since the issue is still open, you can offer to put the log on if they pick up X% of the printing costs. Make sure they understand the value of you having training as well as race outfits so their logo will be out on the street every day instead of just on the race course a couple times a month

I think a discount is more of a supporter than a sponsorship. This is just my view. However, with that being said, Jaggad is a supporter of mine and they gave me a contract to sign stating exactly what they expect out of me in return for how they support me. Did you receive anything along the lines of this with the company that is giving you the discount? I would do what others have suggested in that you talk to the company about your intentions (or not) in putting their logo on your race gear. See what they say and if they are willing to contribute or help you out even more.

My old LBS took care of me a lot for a while and I did all of the things they asked of me logo-wise (stickers on the bikes, etc.). They never asked me to put their logo on my ITU suit, but I did anyway. They were mildly appreciative, but nothing more ever really came of it. I looked back on it as a waste of $60. I wouldn’t add your sponsor logo just because, but I do think that STP’s suggestion to develop your relationship with your sponsor by talking about it would be a great thing to do.

One big issue is the cost of screening. Depending, you might ask them to cover the cost of screening. And, of course, you can also use the different sizes of logos and position to indicate importance. That might be a good way to go. If a small logo drives up some business for them, they might change from just a discount to something else.

Then again, I personally think that unless you are getting your picture in the magazine, screening of your gear is a bit of a waste. Screening can, however, be good for companies where the immediate usage of their product is not obvious - i.e., nutrition sponsor, wetsuit, etc.

This is all up for discussion with them. Some of my sponsors mandate the logo on the uni. Others do not.

One thing you may not have considered is how long you plan to wear/keep the kit. What if your sponsors change down the road? Personally, I don’t place any of my sponsor’s logos on my personal or team gear, since I stock the clothing year to year. I have had sponsors who have insisted on having their logo on clothing - they paid for the screening and the clothing.

However, if the logo placement were part of the sponsorship deal, I would certainly have the screening done.

My sponsors are on board because I use and talk up their products, not for the limited exposure a logo on a jersey gives.
