SPOILER: Stage 6

Pile up in the Peleton at the end. Lance still has the yellow jersey.

  1. Lorenzo Bernucci (FAS)
  2. Alexandre Vinokourov (TMO)
  3. Robert Forster (GST)
  4. Angelo Furlan (DOM)
  5. Thor Hushovd (C.A)
  6. Kim Kirchen (FAS)
  7. Gianluca Bortolami (LAM)
  8. Egoi Martinez (EUS)
  9. Gerrit Glomser (LAM)
  10. Kurt Atle Arvesen (CSC)

What happened to all the top sprinters? Caught in the crash?

Mostly.

Yupper…not even a chain reaction - they all went down on their own…lots of em. Wet paint stripes…nasty stuff

BTW, Lance finished 0:19 behind. Not enough to put a dent in in his lead. Looks like it’ll be another Tour de Lance unless something unusual happens.

Vino went from 1’21’’ down to 53’’ down. What a great move in the end by him. Would have been even more if he had won, but the crash did give him some time. I thought everyone got the same time if the crash was 3k or shorter from the line. I know he gets a 2nd place time bonus… but that much??

Only the riders who are actually involved in the crash are awarded the same time as the group they were riding with in the final 3K prior to the crash. Riders who are simply slowed by the aftermath of a crash but not directly involved in the crash, must continue on and are awarded actual elapsed time. As long as the crashed riders cross the finish line (with the bike) , those riders are afforded the same time as the group they were with before the crash.

To bad Vino skidded a bit over the last turn, if not for that slip he would have likely won the stage. I can’t wait for him to get in the mountains; no way is he going to wait for Ullrich.

1k not 3k
.

Used to be 1k, now 3k. The interpretation of involved in the crash is loose. If you are held up you typically will be given the same time, wether you hit the deck or not. In Vinos case he had a slight gap before the crash, so he may have been given the bonus plus a few seconds.

Exactly what I said about a week ago. Should be interesting in the mountains.

Yeah, I knew all that “I’m working for Jan” stuff was a bunch of crap. He’s as much for Ullrich as Cunego is for Simoni.

Really? I hadn’t heard they changed that rule. I stand corrected.

If you are held up you typically will be given the same time, wether you hit the deck or not.

The time adjustments are not always instantaneous and it can take the race commissares time to sort out the actual events such that it a rider obviously makes it by unscathed with no ill effects in tempo, then they may or may not award the same time. Typically the rule is applied more liberally such as a corner that leads into the final set of barricades or a high speed, 90-degree corner and a rider goes down which could easily bring the following riders to a momentary, but complete stop until things get sorted out.

I am still hopping for a real battle. The good news is that ALL of the key protagonists are still in the race and fit. It seems that in the last few years, some of Lance’s key rivals, have been felled even before the real racing begins. I think that we are going to see some very interesting dyanamics unfold bewteen Discovery, CSC and T- Mobile and then factor in the opportunists on some of the other teams( Rasmusson & Dekker on Rabobank, Flecha & Cancellera on Fassa, the pure climbers such as Heras and Beloki and a number of others), once the real GC battle begins. Would love to see Lance win seven, but would also like to see him really battle for it and hope the others can really push him.

I am not what one would call a big Lance fan but I respect his efforts and there is no denying his success and so I would also like to see him win number seven. Additionally, on his way to number seven, I would also like to see him silence his critics by battling fierce competition while at the same time taking the win with the largest margin on GC of all his other tour wins! To quote Mercx, “No gifts!”

I think it will be interesting in that if Vino is not working for Jan, there will be a Telekom split. No matter how strong Vino is, it is hard to win the Tour without a strong and complete TEAM behind you these days. Then there is the little matter of Lance being able to blow him away in the TT ;-).

Jimmy

Yeah, great rider Vino, in fact I’ve put him in as number 2 this year. But he got lucky today, just like when he gained time in 2003 following Beloki’s crash and Lance’s cornfield saga. I don’t think his TT runs for the tape work in TdeF flat stages like they do in the classics. There’s too much speed behind him.
