After a cagey 1 1/2 laps on the velodrome at Roubaix the 3 man break resulted in Tom Boonen giving the native Belgium crowd a home win from Big George Hincapie placing 2nd for his best position in this classis race with Juan Antonio Fletcher taking the third.
Altought the move that put these three clear of the field it was surprising to see Hincapie and Fletcher riding in to the finish at such a relatively easy pace knowing full well that if they didn’t try to make a push to get rid of Boonen they would never outsprint him on the track.
With the points garnered from this race Boonen rises to the top of the Pro Tour today. It will be interesting to see how Boonen performs at the Amstel Gold next weekend.

Did the fact that his name was “Juan Antonio” and not “John Anthony” not give you a hint that it’s “Flecha” and not “Fletcher”
No, I thought that it would be better to get it out in a timely fashion, than to delay by trawling google for the correct spelling, to the good people of ST. I have learnt my lesson and consider myself suitably admonished.

Google?! I guess you don’t follow cycling much if you don’t know who Flecha is If you were watching the race on TV in the land of the Duchess of Cornwall, “Flecha” and “Fletcher” do sound alike
I am glad you have learned your lesson, though… admonishing over.
Oh, I know who he is, but being an anglophile (and not based near Camillaville) I was unsure of the correct spelling and therefore used the phoenetic spelling to ensure everyone knew who was being referred to. IT seemed to work as you wouldn’t have been to tell me off otherwise.
My dear Julian
I was referring to the five-man break that stayed out front till about 14K left when Michaelsen punctured…then there were four…till Backstedt got dropped…THEN there were three. See? During the long 5-man break was when they might have tried to drop, or at least put a hurt on, Boonen. That’s what I meant!
