Spitting up blood after race?

This morning I did a small sprint triathlon and after I finished the run I was coughing/spitting up a bit of blood for about twenty minutes or so. I felt like I had to clear my throat and I would cough and then spit and there would be some blood mixed in with the spit. Does anyone know what could cause this to happen? I’ve gotten a metallic taste in my mouth before after races, but I don’t think I’ve coughed up blood before.

Thanks,

Adam

Was it very dry out? Did your nose bleed a little?

I’ve heard of it happening after high intensity runs/rides…Supposidly, Graeme Obree coughed up blood for several days after his hour - record attempts…

Somewhere I heard this is normal for horses…not for humans. Couldn’t hurt to ask your doctor. Could be nothing…could be cancer.

“could be cancer”

that’s what happened to Lance…

See a doctor.

You could have everything from a virus/infection to something more serious. I echo others that say get a doc to look at it.

It was very, very humid, and I didn’t have a nose bleed.

I spoke with a doctor friend today and he told me that I probably just tore a small capillary in my lungs and that if it doesn’t happen again I shouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks for the responses.

yikes! at least I know why I was bleeding
