Spitting in goggles

I never used to feel silly about this. Last night, though, I spit in my goggles when I got in the pool just like I always do and was suddenly embarrassed to have done so. Not because anyone saw me (I think there were two other people swimming at the time). I just felt stupid. I remember hearing that spitting in goggles keeps them from fogging up. It really doesn’t. Besides, they usually get a tiny amount of water in them at some point, so it really doesn’t matter if they fog up a bit. Anyway, it occurred to me just how ridiculous and kind of gross I must look every time I jump in the water. So I’m not going to spit in my goggles anymore.

Anybody else do this?

I actually lick mine, have been for years. Mmmmm, tasty swedes, auggghhh! I’d never give that up!

I’m a freediver and scuba diver and have spit in my goggles and masks for years.

Believe it or not, it does prevent fogging, but only for some people. Not sure what it is, but some people’s saliva doesn’t have what it takes to prevent fogging. If anyone knows the reason for this I’d love to know.

Like kevinp01, I also lick mine. Spitting is gross, but licking is perfectly fine.

Lick them! And if anybody looks at you funny, hand them your goggles and ask “wanna taste?”

Toothpaste. After spending the last 15 years scuba diving, its the best thing. No For designed more a regular mask works good too. But, toothpaste seems to be the best thing I’ve found.

I just got a new pair of goggles, we’re not at that stage of our relationship yet.

I use baby shampoo. Those 99 cent travel size bottles are like a two year supply.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again…

I like the way you think.

I’ve been spitting in my goggles for 22 years and I’m proud of it  And I never have a problem with fogging. Just a foggy memory.

I remember hearing that spitting in goggles keeps them from fogging up. It really doesn’t.

I put about a drop of soap in mine beforehand, rub it around, and rinse it out in the pool. Other folks here use baby shampoo, which is even better.

I think i could be the only jerk who actually uses the speedo(or other type) defogger spray  Its lasted forever and my goggles never fog, fredly or not.

I’ll second licking the Swedes.

As much as I would rather be licking Swedes, I am spitting in TYRS…and have been forever and ever.

No moist europeans, of course…but no fogging, either, so I’ll take what I can get.

“Moist Europeans”… Awesome.

i’ve never really had a problem with my goggles fogging up at all, so thankfully, no, i don’t spit in them.

lick finger, smear on goggle. kinder, gentler method.

I went snorkeling with a diver who told me that it is the protein in your spit that keeps the lens from fogging. Maybe some people don’t have enough protein in their spit…

Every tyr, AND Speedo that I have ever owned fogged up within the first two laps of using them. So I spit in them before I start every swim. Never really thought if other thought it was gross or not. I thought thats just what you did to keep them clear. I pride myself in good personal hygiene, but I must have a little grossness in me afterall.

dont forget to rinse them out after spitting in them
