Spira Shoes

Anyone using these? http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=2039579

They look fairly interesting

Not using them, but we sell them in the running store where I work part time. We tend to tell runners they’re not really the shoe for them, as they’re sort of heavy and clunky. Non-serious ‘joggers’ or walkers (not to be too elitist here), who want a very springy comfortable shoe, seem to like them a lot. I think the idea has merit, but steel springs/coils feel sort of weird to me, but maybe that’s the weight or something. I don’t like the feel of a Nike Shox either, for that matter. I’d say if you’re a Clydesdale, you may want to compare them with a Brooks Beast or similar and see what you think.

Cheers

Barry

I had received a pair of these free to try out. Here are my thoughts:

  • Disappointed in how heavy they are. Also, they are extremely loud when you are running - I did not feel light on my feet when I ran in them.

  • Positives: They are intended to cause less strain on your body through the cushioning. I feel like that is apparent when you run in the shoes.

My pair of shoes are about a year old and I know that Spira is continually make improvements with their technology. Newer versions may be lighter and less clumsy feeling on the feet.

the krasfur live in El Paso (lawyers), the shoes are made here I think. see a lot of these here and they even have a shop at the airport here.

didn’t try them but the commentsI heard were

  1. very unstable (avoid if you have achille problems, knee problems etc.)
  2. with one of the models you can feel the spring getting hot under your foot when you run
  3. heavy

these were the comments from very good runners

non runners or occasional runners love them though

The USATF has banned them. Springs in shoes aren’t allowed.

USATF rule 71(3) (a) says in part that “the purpose of shoes for competition is to give protection and stability to the feet and a firm grip to the ground. Such shoes, however, must not be constructed so as to give the competitor any additional assistance, and no spring or device of any kind may be incorporated in the shoes.”

http://www.zcoil.com/styles/bwfreedom.jpgYou should get some of these instead. I thought they were a whimsical window display until I realized they were real shoes, and only $200 a pair.

I’ll think you’ll get a little more pep in your step with these Dutch numbers. Check out the videos at this link (they look super-fun): http://www.powerskip.de/photogallery.html http://www.powerskip.de/P02.jpg
