Spinning music help

i’ve posted this question in a few other forums with no luck thus far…so i’m asking the slowtwitch music lovers. i’m sure most of you have taken a spinning class or two…so you know what role the music plays. so i need some help in finding some new music. what music can you suggest?

some of my favorites are radiohead, dj shadow, i’ve used some classic rock like ccr, hendrix, led zeppelin, but i tend to prefer the more electronic/ambient sound with heavy downbeats. any suggestions.

many thanks.

I side on the electronic, ambient, trance and jungle side but I would take this question to the people that attend your classes. Nothing makes them happier (and more motivated) than hearing their favorite songs. And we aren’t going to be able to tell ya their favorite songs

hid,
do you have any specific recommendations from those genres?

i understand what you are saying about asking the class, and i have, but i’m always on the lookout for more recommendations. for the most part the class doesn’t care what i play, as long as i give them a good workout, but i try to give them as much variety as possible.

thanks.

DJ John Kelly, Doc Martin, Garth, Jeno, Orbital, Mark Farina, Digweed and Sasha, Orb…

I’ll pull up more when I get home. But I must worn you that I like stuff with a “trippier” sound

All right, I’m kind of a geek… but I like some fun music thrown in… only so much heart pounding music I can listen to.

Some of the tunes that make me smile at spin class:

Theme from Speed Racer; Kung Fu Fighting; Turning Japanese; Video Killed the Radio Star; Elvis Burning Burning Love, etc.

Goldmund:

Do a “search posts” for the term “music” or “mp3” and you’ll see some good past discussions of the topic, with a lot of suggestions.

My favorite workout genre is electronica, especially The Crystal Method. Great beats, good tempo. Check it out. (I’m partial to their “Vegas” CD. Good stuff.)

Is there a RULE among Spinning class leaders (or whatever the F they call themselves) that only thumpa thumpa disco club music be played???

I once toyed with the notion of getting certfied just so I could play anything but that cr@p.

How’s about a little Dick Dale / Ventures / Shadows surf music for a change??? Or really mix it up with some Specials or Madness. (I hate to betray my DeadHead roots, but Jambands and Spinning don’t mix - they need a strictly outdoors, open road, Sunshine Daydream vibe)

Let’s not discount a little metal here and there, either.

I always check who the instructor is before signing up for classes at the club where I train. All that remixed, hip-hop/disco crap doesn’t motivate me at all. I vote for Tom Petty - Running Down a Dream, Creed - Higher (a climbing song!), maybe some good old AC/DC, Police - Message in a Bottle, Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself, Van Halen - Panama … can you tell I was an 80s teen?

I lead a class - my music selection last night was something like this - it was a big climbing class, so the tempo later in the ride was pretty slow - we were shooting for 60-80 RPM depending on how steep the hill was.

Crazy Train - Ozzy Ozborne
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
Shoot to Thrill - AC/DC
When I Grow Up - Garbage
Get this Party Started - Pink
Lose Youself - Eminem
Die Another Day - Madonna
Work It - Missy Elliott
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
Rock Superstar - Cypress Hill
Hella Good - No Doubt
Jimi Thing - Dave Matthews Band
Champagne Supernova - Oasis
Learn to Fly - Pink Floyd

There was also some Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed in here - can’t remember exactly where, though.

I did a class a few weeks ago that was all metal - Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult (can’t get enough cowbell). Also done classes with all 80’s - but good 80’s like the Plimpsouls, the Cure, Modern English and the B-52’s.

I think music makes a huge difference - it helps you find a tempo to ride to, and it makes the class more intesting. I use the same mixes from my class when I ride the computrainer.

Hey, Truckin’ is a great cooldown song. You could also get away with Mexicali Blues for some easy tempo stuff.

Try some Evanescence - great trainer music!!!

Holiday in Cambodia… thanks for the recall. I’ve got to put that cd back into my collection.

First off, check out the new Apple mini-I-pod. It rules. I just bought one.

I listen to '80s hair bands like Dokken, Slaughter, Def Leppard, White Lion, etc. I was a drummer in a band in the '80s and that music brings back fun memories of being in the music industry.

I also like Godsmack, Powerman 5000, System of a Down, Anything Rob Zombie, Prodigy and the like.

If its fast and hot it works for me.

Ditto on the iPod mini … Fed Ex delivered mine (in blue) today. Smaller than I thought it would be … barely larger than a Zippo lighter. Holds 1000 songs … more than I’ll ever need. Tres cool.

Yeah, the Clash, too. Train in Vain, White Riot, Career Opportunities, Safe European Home. Tons of the early stuff strung together is great for pace work - almost all are at the same tempo. Guns of Brixton is a little slow for anything other than slow force workouts, though…

It’s gonna sound odd, but I had a spinning instructor that always played Enigma. It was actually very cool for those long grinding efforts.

Then again, he also wore crotchless bike shorts, would cover the floor with woodchips, and let 3 dozen hampsters loose during the class. He was really out there but the music kicked ass.

I’m serious about the music. I wouldn’t have thought I would have liked it, but I did.

thanks everyone for all the suggestions…just in case anyone happens upon my class in the future, i do play music from a lot of genres, except no country ;), and sorry, no 80’s hair bands. that just doesn’t cut it. but i have a few classic rock mixes (ccr, hendrix, zepp, et.al), a lot of pearl jam, black crowes, 90’s stuff, but most of my music does tend toward the more electronic/ambient feel. but i’ll be taking home some good suggestions from this post. especially the enigma. i’m not sure why i haven’t thought about that already.

thanks again…
