Speedplay Zero Unclipping Problem

I read all over the web about people complaining that they can’t get out of the zero’s. I have the exact opposite problem.

I can be riding along after hearing them click into the pedal quite nicely and then all of a sudden it just unclips. I can be on flat ground and pushing only and they unclip. I could see if maybe I was climbing and pulling hard but that is not the case.

Anyone have a similar experience that can shed some light on what might be going on?

It is quite dangerous as i almost had my foot hit the ground in front of the pedal while going about 25 mph. I don’t want to think about what that might have looked like.

A few ideas:

-are the cleats worn out? If so, replace them. I think you’re supposed to do this every year but I don’t.
-are you lubing the pedals or the cleats with a wet lube? You need to use white lightning or something like that.
-does your foot track straight or are you doing someting funky? If that’s the case then you might need a different pedal. If you don’t know you might want to get someone to watch you on a trainer.

Funny. Same exact thing happened to me this morning. First time it happened, though I’m in Light Actions.

This is usually a problem with the spring in the cleat getting stuck and not coming fully back (so you’re clipped in, but not fully clipped in). Make sure the cleat spring is lubed (white lightening every month or two), and check the cleat assembly. A speedplay cleat is a “sandwich” and things can get pinched (often if there is some slack, or some debris in the assembly). Make sure the spring has free motion and recovery.

Speedplay user since '94 (Look and Time b4 that).

I agree with Titanflexr…I wonder how well you are really clipped in.

A possibility is that you have used the wrong wedges, or torqued down too much on the cleat as it attaches to the bottom of the shoe, giving it too much curve. This will affect how easily the spring within the cleat can move and engage into the slot in the pedal.

I’ll loosen the screws up a bit and see what happens. I tightened them down and “loctited” them since one of the screws was almost falling out this morning. The fact that it almost was falling out though kind of works against the theory that they were too tight as I’ve come unclipped earlier this year when I was on the trainer and didn’t tighten them. It went away for a while but now has returned. It almost seems to be an intermittent thing. I wonder what the odds of hitting the same side of the pedal most times and then occasionally getting the other side. I’d guess I’d have a 50/50 chance of getting into one side or the other so again it seems to point to the cleats.

Thanks for the feedback.

I went back the the LBS where I bought them and the guy replaced them straight up, no cost. And mine were 2 years old!

I had the same problem.
I have no idea how many miles were on the pedals, but out of the couple sets that I have they are the oldest and no more than 5 years old. It was only on that one set that I had the problem - all of the others with the same shoes/cleats were O.K. So it wasn’t the cleats, cleat tension…

I found replacement bodies at All3sports.com for $85. It’s easy to replace the bodies if you have the tools. So, if new cleats and all else fails, this may be your option. If you have the Cro/Mo you’ll be better off replacing the pedals since they are around 120 new.

Depending on how much you ride and if your pedals were used when you bought them, this is something to think about. Nothing last forever. And it seems like the metal part of the pedal body eventually wears down - likewise the tension spring on the cleat.

ndt…,
Just curious if you have had this problem continue?

I went back to the LBS because the problem persisted even with the new pedals. We looked at the cleats and added some spacers under the front and back to make the pedal better match the curve of the shoes (Specialized somethings) and a total new pedal fitting… Hopefully I’ll get to see if it did any good this weekend… the wife isn’t happy about my training schedule and work schedule so …

Hasn’t happened since. I’ve been really happy with my light actions. I’m chalking my mishap to my unfamiliarity with the pedal system.
