Speedplay pedal question

…because I’m too lazy to look it up…

Just got a new tri bike and need new pedals for it. I have Speedplays on my roadie.

Do all Speedplay pedals work with all Speedplay cleats? Or do I basically need to get the same Speedplay “type” that I have on my current bike?

Thanks.

Hi,
Congrats on the new bike.
They are not all interchangeable. Don’t quote me, but i believe speedplay zero’s can’t be used with light action cleats and viceversa.
The speedplay website is plenty informative. I’m sure you can figure it out from there.
Good luck.

Zero and X series aren’t interchangeable. Zero and Light Action are the same pedal with different cleats.

Thanks guys. Sounds as if I need to get off my rear end and do some research. sadly I can’t even remember which Speedplays I have on my roadie!

There are differences in the pedal between light action and zeros. I’m not sure if they’re only cosmetic or not.

This article can help you determine which pedals you have. The section on Speedplays has some good side by side pictures of the three models.

Thanks. Pretty sure I have Speedplay Zeros, but I guess I should check!

actually they are not the same pedals, or the same cleats. I don’t know what’s different about them I just know they aren’t interchangeable, per a sales rep at Speedplay.

Yellow cleats are Zeros
.

Or green.

no they’re not the same but as someone who also rolls on speedplay, i’m just fired up that SIDI is finally making a speedplay compatible sole!

That is exactly the shoe that just arrived on my doorstep today. Ah yes!

I’m confused- I’ve been using speedplays on my SIDI Genius 5.5’s for the last year. Have I managed to attach the cleats to an incompatible shoe, or do you just mean you’re glad a factory-supplied adapter is no longer necessary?

no adapter necessary any more. not a big deal to some people but having ridden both, i’d prefer to not need an adapter plate.

What shoe is that? I did a quick google search and only turned up SIDI road shoes that were speedplay ready.

Where on-line is the new SIDI SP tri shoe on sale? I want…

even though the Light Action and Zero pedal bodies are slightly different, the Zero cleat will attach to and release from a Light Action pedal body. I only clipped in/out a couple times to test things out, so I’m not sure how it would work as a long-term setup, but the parts definitely fit together.

Hmmm…not sure what to tell you

Note: Light Action pedals are not compatible with Speedplay Zero and X-Series cleats.

I know they say they’re not compatible, but the Zero cleat does clip in/out from a Light Action pedal.

of course the cynical view is that it’s harder to sell a brand new set of pedals (at $100+) when you can “upgrade” to the Zero system from the Light Actions by buying a $40 set of cleats.
