Speedmax x Aerium Basebar

I’m in the process of fitting an Aerium C68x handlebar/stem to my Speedmax CF. I call it the Aermax. Or Speedmium. Or… Whatever. The bike originally came with clip ons which are great, except when you want a high elbow position.

Canyon says the new Speed Max handlebar is not compatible (cough bullshit cough), but they won’t sell you one anyway. The PD Wing, Wing Ultimate, Vision TFA are literally none existent in the EU and with a baby on the way, I can’t afford a €2k cockpit.

If this post gets some likes and comments, I’ll do a full write up.

Here’s a WIP. Stem fits beautifully as do the brake lines. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Should be done by Saturday with the ugh… transplant. Surgery. Frankenbike.

Thoughts so far?

Looks good! That looks like the R073 model- did that have the V21 stem and the warranty work done? Probably has something to do with the treatment you got, if so…

Nice job! Would love to see some more pictures when you have some

Thanks and Yup! Would have been a nice opportunity for Canyon to upgrade a few bikes but they wouldn’t budge, even if I paid for the whole upgrade.

Here are a few photos of the finished bike. I bought the handlebar for €200 and the cube kit only cost €230. The front end tracks better than before, is stiffer and much more stable! Really happy with how it came out.

Did the Cube kit have its own scoops that you opted not to use? €430 for a cockpit like that seems like a steal!

Easy to start making assumptions and rip on Canyon, bur they’re actually not compatible…

The fork previously did not have space for internal routing. I tried with an aftermarket expander from FSA, but didn’t even need to try installing it after having the bike apart. There is no space in the fork crown. The new bikes come with a new fork that has a channel molded in there.

Unfortunately no arm rests included, but tbh theres no way someone could pry the TriRigs off my arms  where I live in Germany, it’s just a bit too windy, and the TriRigs hold quite well.

The PD Wing 20c plus doesn’t come with risers, so in addition to the €800 base price here in the EU, you also need a stem and risers…

Sorry I should have been clearer. Canyon said the FRAME is incompatible. I was more than willing to buy the fork, handlebar and remaining parts, but they said no. They also wouldn’t sell me the HB0053

At any rate, the important thing to note is that the Cube Aerium handlebar can be used on a standard 1 1/8 steerer. It should also fit the Cervelo P Series, several QR models, and a bunch of other bikes which have a standard steerer.

Do you say the PD wing 2-/c costs € 800?

I haven’t found the 20c+ in stock any cheaper. Holland bike have it listed for €480, but every time I went to buy it they cancelled the order :frowning: it’s what led me on the search for an affordable alternative.

Strange, we sell it for 340 euro, in stock, just not in our webshop, just too busy to listed it :-)).

Very nice. Did you consider the TriRig Alpha One at all? And why did you replace the V21?

Mate, this is what I was afraid of! I knew SOMEONE has to have it in stock for a normal price somewhere, but it’s not showing up in google! Next time I’ll just call your shop :sob:

Yes - I like the looks of the TriRig Alpha but it just came down to cost and adjustability. The Aerium bar uses Profile Design parts, so I knew my fitter would have an easy time with making the basebar work. I have the V21 in my basement in case I ever need to return the bike to original. I took the wife out to dinner with some of the money I saved so it was a win win!

Where did you order the Cube cockpit from!? Earlier this year, I was looking for a new cockpit to replace the one I had on my Andean, and the Cube base bar was first on my list of preferred aerobars by a mile. I also have a complete set of PD Aeria Ultimate risers and bolts I could have used on the Cube base bar, but I could not find a Cube retailer who would respond to my interest.

I ended up getting a Alpha X base bar kit which I like a lot but it required too much customization to reach the height I need because my frame is one size too small for me. With the PD parts I already had, much less customization would have been required even if the overall weight of the system might have been higher. The customization took about a month that could have been spared if I used components in my parts bin instead.

Aaarrgh, that’s so frustrating! I take it you aren’t in Europe then? They sell them all over the place in the “Cube Stores”, both in regular and high versions. It’s such a beautiful handlebar  I bought the handlebar on eBay, and my bracket set shipped from the Nano bike Cube store. eBay is also riddled with the regular version of the handlebar for roughly €200.

Can you see if this link works for you?

Hi there,
Ive got the exact same problem. However I came down on my speedmax and damaged the base bar on a corner. After a long (but fruitful) call with the Canyon sevice team, I put down an order for the HB0053 bar. Since they have no stock atm, its not 100% certain ill get one. They will have to get them produced first, but it seems possible to change the handlebars in this situation.
Buut after inspecting your solution with the Cube handlebar, I might be more inclined towards it, since the brake lines run a bit more integrated and its stem + base bar (cleaner front end).
How is your experience so far with the setup, any quirks/remarks with the Frankenbike?

So far I love the Frankenbike. I’m not sure if it’s because of the integrated stem or not, but the front end feels drastically tighter and more dialed in. The stem is for a normal 28.6mm steerer, so there are no compatibility issues. The stem has 18° drop, 1° more than the original stem but I can’t feel a difference. I took the bar/stem off and did not see any issues with the interface to the steerer.

The arm pads are moved considerably forward, so I don’t feel scrunched on the bike - feels like I can get into the modern forward TT position without an expensive cockpit. The whole fitment kit was a massive upgrade too.

The magnetic top cover can be ordered from Cube. I have the part number in my emails. If you do go with the bar, then I can pull it up. Currently I’m just using black electrical tape as I frequently remove the tape to check on the hoses - so far so good.

Thanks for sharing, your setup looks really cool.

I am thinking of doing a similar thing with a P-series as per this build.

I am wondering about cable routing. Is it only in front of the steerer tube? OR there is also an option to have cables coming out behind the steerer tube?
