SpeedConcept Mono Bar Water solution

I made the title as self explanatory as I could.

The Bontrager Mono bar is kind of nice in some ways and super stupid in one :

Standard hydration aero units cant mount it.

I wanted to know if anyone had seen some good solutions out there.

Getting a bit nervous as nutrition hinders me and dehydration will kill my race.

Did I mention this is for Sunday at raleigh?

Damn you bontrager.

Do you mean stuff like Profile Designs Aerodrink and the Torhans units? I used both on my Cervelo, and I ended up favoring the X-labs torpedo system. Fortunately, that mounts perfectly to my new 2014 Speed Concept on the monobar mount. The only set back is the money for the mount since you don’t use the cage that comes with it. It’s around $75 for the mount. That said, I believe you could mount it using the X-lab included risers if you were so inclined.

Here’s a pic of mine. You can see the torpedo mount over the monobar.

Jeez 75$

My girls aero drink was like 20!

Standard aero bars are way better IMO today…

I might look into a zip tie solution.

But thats not a bad setup you have there.

The rail will be available separately…for this exact reason…just not in time for your race I’m afraid.

So you’re telling me I am looking into Zip Ties?

that or one of the other DIY methods other STers have come up with. just wanted you to know the need hadn’t gone unnoticed.

I have been trying to google this for some time now.

But seeing as I leave for our lodging for the race in 26 hours.

Its officially crunch time.

Getting the race tune up done while I am at work tomorrow.
This and possibly rental wheels are the last on my list.

#Preracejitters

Was just on the TriRig Shootout.

Im really debating taking a walk to my local hardwood store and just making my own BTA bottles…

Any thoughts or suggestions?

One draw back I see is unable to re fill. But is the A2 worth it at the 50$+? I guess at least I get 15% off at the LBS.

Is that the X-Lab computer mount on the front of the Torpedo setup? This is the exact setup I was looking at and wondered how it fit. I’ll probably just sell my Trek cage and keep the mount or keep the for when I feel like carrying a normal bottle.

It is the computer mount. One thing of note is that directly under the computer mount, you can see foam I glued there. The platform would flex enough over bumps that the bolt would smash into the monobar. I had a pretty good pit dug out of it until I noticed. That’s my only complaint, and the fix is easy. I’m happy with the setup overall.

I would probably try to use at least one of the existing holes (for the rail mount) and ziptie the other end of the cage. I’d run a long waterbottle cage bolt (say, M5x25mm or so) through the cage and a spacer of some sort (like a few stacked washers, or a large nut) and that gives you one hard point. The other end I’d ziptie, probably with a couple ties - one in each direction to the left & right - either off of the cage itself or through the other bolt hole in the cage, depending on your cage design.

Thats a good call.

Hardwood store is on the list of stops today.

So I have to ask -

I just ran it by my buddy here at work. Who is basically macguyver.

“Why over complicate? Why dont you just go get a camelback and make it happen?”

I dont have an answer for him.

Why don’t we use camel backs as triathletes?

Better yet, google the jog strap. I think it would possibly work on the bike and run. There will be an informational video that comes up.

I think because of poor aerodynamics, it getting in the way of an aero helmet, it getting in the way of back pocket access, and it tugging uncomfortably on the shoulders for half and full IM efforts. Just speculating though.

NSFW but Ill be sure to send you something equally as foolish next chance I get.

Thats a good point.

For that kind of distance. Phew.
50+ miles and when its empty its probably really annoying.

You could always try a Frank Schleck with wearing the Camelbak over your abdomen to induce a “fairing effect”

Not too sure how much time it would add to your transitions.

FWIW-

I am currently using the bottle cage that comes with the mount and have no plan on switching it out. Most cages grab the sides while the Trek cage grabs the bottom/top which makes it super easy to grab the bottom of the bottle allowing you to squeeze and drink without having to do the awkward hand shuffle from top of bottle to bottom of bottle required by typical BTA setups. The cage is also fairly far from stiff (aka easy to pull a bottle out and put it back in), but the design has yet to launch a bottle over some big bumps likely due to the top/bottom hold.

This is a solid point but I dont want to have to get out of the aero bars at all unless I am climbing a steep hill.

I just want to be able to get to worlds at whatever cost.
Well that sounds bad.

I want to get there with a solid plan and effort.
