Specialized transition (5)

I´m interested in purchase a transition comp 2008, nice black and yellow machine. My doubt is about the first version of the seatpost collar, if the bike comes with it. That´s a serious problem?, is synonimous of future frame cracking?. I can change the collar for the version 2009?, is compatible?. My dealer only has this bike on my size small and if the problem isnt serious with the seatpost collar I buy the bike near future.

Thanks for your opinions!

I have no idea what you are talking about with collars breaking and all. This is not a reported problem.

The big change Specialized made with this seatpost is creating multiple mounting angles FOR FIT, not because it will break off like some Canadian POS that is popular on this website… It’s really difficult to find different seatposts. If you are purchasing from a Specialized LBS, then you should make him go out and find that for you from Specialized.

…And you need to do more research on fit and just bikes in general.

from what I understand, specialized re-tooled and added additional carbon to that portion of the 2008/2009 transition frame due to earlier models breaking from over tightening of the seatpost. I have not heard of the beefed up frames cracking. If you purchase that bike (or any lightweight or carbon bike), you should own a torque wrench if you plan on adjusting the seatpost (or other parts) and also use carbon paste so that that you can use a lower torque to acheive a secure seatpost. I have an S-works transition and really like the fit and ride; I use a torque wrench and fsa carbon paste on the seatpost, and it has worked well. If the seatpost/frame breaks, specialized will warranty it, assuming it was purchased through a specialized dealer.

You dont understand my question Sir, What is the reason Specialized has changed seatpost collars for the 2009 transitions. See in detail a photo and the collar is more tall on 2009 models. What transition do you own?

Very very clear your answer, you think I can change the seatpost collar on a 2008 transition to the 2009 seatpost collar or you think the framesets has any differences at the top seattube level?

Regards

Hmm, Guru?

From what I understand, the 2008 and 2009 transitions were identical, except cosmetically. I haven’t seen the 2010 transitions close up, but I doubt the seatpost clamps are interchangeable from 2008/2009 to 2010 unless the change was in the removable expander bolt/clamp, but your dealer or specialized should be able to confirm. My bike is a 2008 S-works transition.

On your bike you have the new or the older seatpost collar?

Milton

i’ve worked on a transition. the design of the proprietary brakes (i.e., you can’t replace them with another brand) is a complete disaster. i would not buy a transition, as this is a major headache, and others have reported this as well.

I have a comp–the big difference between the 08 and 09 is one has a SRAM cassette, the other has Shimano (a lot of folks didn’t care for the “noise” of the SRAM); one has Zipp bars, the other…not zipp (can’t remember what it has…syntace?). Also, there was an issue with the brakes in some of the earlier models–tiny piece was not machined correctly, and therefore caused some brakes to “spring” and not close properly, no matter how much you adjusted. (If you can’t guess, I have the model with the SRAM/ZIPP/Goofy brake)

Once we figured that out, however, I contacted specialized, explained what the issue was, and they sent me a new arm that was machined right. We replaced it, and went on our merry way. Yea, swapping wheels out takes a bit longer than with a regular dropout and brake system, so I typically just leave my race wheels on… but other than that initially headache (albeit a big one to figure out–and had my husband, who is a design engineer and works a lot on very small machined parts, not eventually niticed it, we may never have figured it out), I have had no problems, and have enjoyed my bike quite a bit.

“Proprietary” can mean problems…but Specialized was great, and I am very happy with my bike now that I’ve worked the kinks out.

My bike is spec’d as an 08 (Zipp bars; SRAM cassette), but was built new in 09, and i have the seatpost collar from an 09. I have had no issues with this one…but that doesn’t mean you’d have issues with the 08, either. Use a torque wrench, and be careful.

Thank you friend, very good your response. I´m 173cm of height, do you think the small is the best size for me?. I cant try the bikes because I live in Uruguay and we dont have specialized dealer.

Do you have pics of your bike?

Im in love with the colors of the comp, do you think the same

If I purchase the bike I put Hed3 front and rear, I think they are good wheels for a slowman (me) and nice touch to the bike!!!. Do you agree?

I am 175 cm (5’9"), with an inseam 34.5" (88 cm). I ride a medium. The medium is largely b/c of my long legs. I think you could probably make a small work. I could fit on a small with tweaking, but def. not a large.

Part of the reason I bought the Comp was because I liked the colors better than the reds and whites of all the others. The price didn’t hurt, either. I loved my Hed 3s, they are very nice wheels. I currently have 808s on this bike.

I don’t have pics on this computer, but if I can scrounge some up, I will post them

Sorry man. I am on an '09 Pro. Love it! Definitely recommend the Transition!

One of the reasons for the delay of the delivery of the Transition is 2008 was the retooling of the seat-mast. This has not be a common issue with the store delivered Transitions. I have had mine for over a year and I have assembled and sold over a dozen of them with no issues. The collars are not interchangeable (they are bonded to the frames). But, if you were to ever have an issue it would be warrantiable…not sure if that is a word, but you know what I mean.

Hope this helps.

comparing pictures on the specialized website, it appears that my transition has the newer (2009) seat collar, although the paint scheme is the 2008 blue/white.

Ok, thank you. Relative to transition comp 2008-2009 does exists any difference in the intensity of yellows or they are the same yellows.

I have a pdf wich explain seat post assembly and the schemes have the seatpost collar outside the seat tube. hen you assemble the seatpost you introduce seatspost and collar simultaneously. I send it the pdf later.

Have a good day.
