Specialized Frame question

I am only referencing the frame in this question…

The Specialized site is not very clear.
Can anyone explain to me the differences in the frames on the Tarmac and Roubaix? They come in the S-Works SL, the Pro, the Expert and the Comp.
Does anyone also know the weight of each?

Thanks in advance.

For all Specialized bikes the ‘pro’, ‘expert’, ‘comp’ usually refers to the components. Sometimes there is a difference in frame material on the low end, but that info can be found on the website by looking at the ‘tech specs’ for the bike you’re interested in.

S-Works is always the highest performance frame available. SL differs from the ‘Pro’ frames in the type (quality) of carbon used.

Tarmac vs Roubaix frames have a number of differences. The Tarmac is a bit more ‘quick’ in terms of how it handles. The Roubaix is more ‘balanced’ in terms of handling and has a slightly more comfortable ride. It comes down to personal preference. Both are extremely stiff, light, and responsive performance oriented frames.

I don’t know the specific frame weights, but the s-works especially are LIGHT!

tarmacs have more of a race geometry, whereas the roubaix has a "endurance geometry. the roubaix has a taller headtube and is more relaxed, and has zertz vibration dampening elastemers in the fork, seatstays, and seatpost. the tarmac handles a little faster and doesn’t have any zertz.

Thanks. I noticed if you are buying just the frame the prices for the Comp, Expert, Pro and S-works are very different. So for a Tarmac for example, the geometry of all would be the same but the grade of carbon is different?

the tarmac has zertz in every spot that the roubiux does.

I’m pretty sure that is correct. There may be slight differences, but for the most part they have the same geometry.

that is incorrect, look at these pics roubaix: http://www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/2007/bikes/RB_SW_SRAM_Carbon_TG_d.jpg

I have a tarmac and it has zertz, so no offense, but your wrong…http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa319/runpuddrun/IMG_0285.jpg

Actually, you’re both right. The Expert and Comp still have Zertz but the Pro, SL, and S-Works do not.

that’s weird. why would they do that?

Runpuddrun, do you like your bike? What do it weigh?

Different frame. The higher-end non-zertz frames use some additional materials (different types of carbon) and layups in the frame to increase compliance while maintaining stiffness. Thus less ‘need’ for Zertz. The zertz frames are nice IMO because you can get a really stiff light frame that is still comfortable. I personally like the ‘style’ of the non-zertz frames (especially the toptube/seattube junction) but prefer the ride of the non-zertz frames. Both are great bikes IMO.

I love the bike. I haven’t’ rode it much this year though, just got it 2 months ago and only rode it about 500-600 miles so far. It climbs like a freaking billy goat though, it flies up the hills. Don’t know how much it weighs, not much though. I don’t think Spec posts their frame weights.

The reason I bought it is because I joined the University cycling team and needed a road bike.

Wow do you carry enough hydration?

I know what you mean. I ride a Tarmac E5 and also love the way it climbs. Just a really fun bike to ride. Good luck on your new team!

that was the first pic of the bike, tried the new homemade rear bottle holder out. I only put it on for long rides, and take it off for races. It also has threads to hold my co2 and tubes. Now I only have the saddlebag.
