So my 2008 Specialized Transition was diagnosed with a crack at the seat stays by my LBS today. The specialized rep isn’t coming in until Tuesday of next week so it looks like I’ll wait at least that long for a prognosis on the overall warranty process. In the mean time, anyone have any experience dealing with spesh on cracked frames, warranty, etc…? No wreck, just hard riding…
I broke an S-Works mountain bike frame through my LBS several ago and it was replaced immediately.
It was NOT a carbon frame, so I’m not sure if the rules have changed.

Any insight one way or another would be helpful.
Thanks!
I think a lot depends on your retailer. I know a horror story of a friend that had to wait weeks for a response as to whether it would be covered, and then waiting another month for the frame to arrive and the bike to be built up. I assume you are the original owner?
Why would they need the rep to look at it? When I used to work at a shop our process was to send the frame back to Specialized, from there they would send a replacement frame.
My frame developed a crack this past summer (mid-July). My LBS (Fraser Bicycle) sent pics to Specialized, they approved it within about a day and within 2 weeks I was on a new replacement frame. About as painless as possible for me, much better than another experience I had with a different manufacturer a few years ago.
Actually, I’m the second owner…but I had the LBS certify the frame and do a full-on check to ensure integrity, etc…
Anyone know if the warranty is non-transferrable?

I think you might have some trouble getting them to honor a warranty if you are not the original owner. If you know the original owner and they can work with you (get you a receipt, etc.) you might be in a better position. My s-works shoes failed and my local bike shop and specialized would not honor the warranty without my receipt. I had to jump through hoops to get credit card verification and original bike shop (out of town purchase) to provide a note saying that I bought the shoes from them. (They don’t keep sales records). The store owner said to me specifically that they were willing to bend the rules a bit for shoes, but they are sticklers for frame warranty issues. Good luck.
Although I am the second owner, I do know the original owner and it was purchase from the same LBS that I do all of my business with…so they know me personally as well, and getting that receipt wouldn’t be hard. My only worry is that Specialized is going to come back and draw a hard-line when it comes to this “original owner policy” regarding the lifetime warranty. Which, btw, is totally their prerogative (def not taking a shot at spesh)…although I don’t know many people who own the same bike for their lifetime.
If you know the original owner, simply have him provide the receipt and be your middle man. According to specialized and the bike shop he is the original owner and there is nothing wrong with having him work on your behalf if it comes down to that.
Well so just an update in case others have or will run into this…
Since I am the second owner and even though I know the first owner and have the original receipt, Specialized will not replace the frame. They will, however, offer crash replacement. So, while I am dissapointed that I won’t be getting the frame replaced…I am still pretty satisfied that Specialized will offer crash replacement since they certainly didin’t have to.
The crack is right in the middle of the seat stays where they meet the Seat post…any ideas on what might have caused a crack there? I’d requested input on ST before I purchase the bike because I was afraid I needed the stiffness of the s-works…but was told the s-works might actually be too stiff and that the pro was just fine (145 lbs)… Lesson learned, i guess.
My S Works Tarmac SL3 cracked and I was riding my new frame within 48 hours. I live less than 10km from the Canadian head office so it was very fast, there was no hastle though my LBS took care of it all.
My 2008 Transition Comp delaminated in the seat tube. I took it back to my LBS where I purchased it. Specialized sent a new Transition Pro frame within 2 days. No charge. Great service!
I’d be very surprised if the loads that cracked your S-works frame wouldn’t have also cracked your pro frame, if you bought it instead at the time.
It’s very hard to say without pics, but I’d hazard a guess that you might have hit a couple of big pot holes pretty hard which would flex the stays in a manner consisent with the damage. Can you post a pic? Also, what wheels are normally on the bike?
