Special needs bag. Does anyone not use them?

Of course you fill them with supplies in case of emergency (flat, blisters, GI, etc) but does anyone ride/run through them if they aren’t having problems? If so, what’s ur PR?

Did one. 10hrs. All depending on aid station set up, I see no real need for special needs.

I never usually use them, carry all my nutrition, Qual for Kona 5 time in 6 years
.

Never once used them. Also qualified for Kona 5 times. I only have one cage on my bike and only drink what they hand out on the course. No food. No salt.

Never failed me.

Spare tubes and CO2. No need for food, unless you have allergies.

Wow! How many calories do you take in on the bike with all that gatorade/perform?

What do you do on the run?

I was a volunteer in run special needs at IMMT. Lots of people, many fast, used them. The pro winner Romain Guillaum…used it.

A bottle of Gatorade has 160 cals. 2 an hour and you are at 320 cals per hour. Your body cant absorb more than that.

On the run just keep slugging small cups of Gatorade and Coke.

I have never run out of fuel in an IM

I’ve never used a special needs bag in an IM. They always have enough fuel out on the course.

I’ve never used one. But I’m slow. 12:37 is my PR. I’ve always used 100% of what is on course.

Jodi

9:59. Didn’t use it in IMNY, which was my first. Carried some gels in my shorts, lots of perform, and bananas and gels from aid stations.

Not totally true for all. Some have posted of calorie intakes of over 500/hour including Rapp.

For Half IM’s, not much need. Just so short and sufficient baseline support on the course.

Rapp said in one of his AMA threads that he considers it to be exactly what it’s title suggests - provide special needs, in special circumstances. So only if something is going wrong does he need the contents of it.

Kona 4 times, but otherwise, same same. Never used one in 27 IMs.

I only use the run special needs bag. I have everything I need for the bike on my bike.

I set them up but have never used them.
