Speaking of Kona

Who all will be there?

I’m leaving Saturday for 10 days of sun and fun and volunteering at registration/body marking. We might work the sin bin too.

I will be there - working the new 2003 transition - 4:30am to 10am as “bike helper”, then 11am to 2:30am as “bike catcher”. Then I plan to go across to the finish line to see the pro’s come home.

Arrive Friday 17th - short flight from Honolulu!

See ya there!

We have a lay-over of approximately 10 hours in Honolulu on our way to Kona. Any suggestions for things to do during that time? How far away from things is the Honolulu Airport? I’d appreciate any input…

I am assuming you will have a 10 hour “daylight” layover.

Probably recommend a visit to Waikiki beach (surf, walk, beach run, relax?) and a walk/run up Diamond Head crater. You actually enter the crater, and walk up the inside face. Great view from the top - take bottled water - it gets real hot. Takes less than 1 hour to walk up and down. Short bus trip from Waikiki to the crater park - route 58 I think. The bus drivers know the the tourists stop here so they will give you lots of notice of where to get off the bus.

You can get from the airport to Waikiki via rental car (15-20 minutes with no traffic, 45+ minutes with peak hour traffic) or taker “The Bus” for $2.00 per trip. If you have not been to Honolulu before and you have only a short time here - “The Bus” is you cheapest and very reliable bet (although they just got back to work after a 30 day union strike - they now have a signed union contract for 5 years so no more strikes for awhile), or a cab/taxi of course but that will set you back $20+ each way

For $25 per person you can take a 1 hour chartered catamaran sail from Waikiki beach - includes beer and mai tai’s and pu pu’s - chips and nibblies. Very casual, relaxing, with about 25 + others. Just walk the beach and book it right there where the cat’s are. The leave every 2 hours or so. The best one, IMO, leaves from The Sheraton Waikiki beach and is called the “Mai Tai”. Done it many times - the sunset cruise is the best one, but that will depend on your lay over timing.

Make sure you give your selves plenty of time to get back to the airport - afternoon traffic is a bitch!

Aloha,

You could visit Pearl Harbor which is right next door to the airport. That’s what I’m going to do on friday with my 4 hour layover in Honolulu.

Pearl Harbor is a good one…lines/wait can be big, so do not delay since you have limited time. 4 hours may be tight. There is a mandatory film viewing, then a boat ride to the memorial.

If you are feeling like a bit of exercise, maybe one of the following:

You could swim from Kaimana to the Hilton: 2.4 miles = Rough Water Swim

OR: 112 miles Oahu Perimeter ride (aka Dick Evans Race) . The current in this year race was a “killer” - 600 of 1000 starters DNFed!!!

OR: 26.3 M Honolulu Marathon course. I run part of the couse every day in training for Dec 14.

I have done all three races, making me one of the slowest IRONMANers since it took me 4 months. Sept to December when each race is held. Ha!

aloha

Any pointers on where to watch the race? Any corners better than the others? Should I rent a car to get to Havi?
