Lost track of that guy crushing the show, are they on break now?
Anyway, I thought I would post this up, certainly triathlon and Slowtwitch related. This happened a dozen years ago, so probably a lot of you never got to see this. It is not a spoof, and it finally settled a long, ongoing debate from the early history of our sport, have fun, only 20 seconds of your day:
Settled the early question of whether day was the creator of the first wetsuit for triathlon or whether Dan had completed or just competed in the 1981 Ironman Hawaii race???
Well aqua man had a wetsuit then like Oneil and Promotion did, a surf suit they called a triathlon suit. Dan was the first one to make an exclusively smooth skin, blind stitched, 5mm thick wetsuit for swimming only. I had a promotion “triathlon” suit in 84, but I could surf in it too…
All those old suits that were called trisuits were super thin too, they had no idea what the advantages to a wetsuit for swimmers actually was. Quintana Roo nailed it out the gate, and suits are pretty much made the same exact way over 30+ years later…
The guy in the comments disagrees. Any insider information on that argument?
Of course he does, as do a few others too. Who you gonna believe, all those wanna be creators, or Alex Trebek? Funny thing is that Dan never really made that claim, while a bunch of others fought it out for that title. I know of 3 companies that claimed to have triathlon suits in the mid 80’s, but they were glorified surf suits, usually made thinner… Dan’s suit was 5mm, smooth skin and blind stitched together, just like every suit is today. It was revolutionary to swimming, not some bad fitting thin surf suit, with a rough exterior…
