Spd pedal questions

I just bought some mt bike type shoes and spd pedals for my commuter bike and am having some problems with them.

  1. They are so tight I have trouble unclipping resulting in the classic “I can’t unclip” tumble in the Subway parking lot the other day. I found the adjustment diagram on the shimano website but am wondering if they will loosen up on their own?

  2. They are also so tight I have had to restraighten my cleats twice now as the become mis aligned fighting to unclip. How tight can you crank the cleats and not damage the shoes?

  3. The pedals have some plastic platforms attached to one side of the pedal. I originally left them on in case I had the above problem. Now I want them off and can’t seem to figure out how to remove them.

Any wrenchs or knowledgable folk care to help me out?

loosen the adjustment screw, it is on the back side(s) of the pedals (the side perpendicular to the pedal platoform)… for the platform side, loosen it a lot until you can pull “unclip” the platform by hand, then re-tighten the screw to the same tension as the non-platformed side

Got it, thanks. It was possible to remove the platforms without much loosening I just had to find the right spot for the screw driver.
