Souza races in Zofingen in 8 hours!

Last December, Kenny was 127.85% of what he is today. That does not mean that he has gone down hill. He made a few changes in his exsistance, netting him 36.5 pounds of body weight loss. He is probably 150% sharper and happier than he was. Over the divorce, off the booze, (well at least cut back considerably!) and back on the hog and trails again.

Souza started back training, with a nudge from me, without a goal or focus. He was adiment that he was done with any competiveness and plans on running to stay healthy. Just as Axel Rose once said, “I used to do a little, but a little wouldn’t do it, so the little got more and more…I just keep trying to get a little better, said a little better than before…” he kept raising the bar. October, he was jogging 4 mi at a knee aching pace. After a while, I told him that 8:30mi is harder on my body than 6min pace. Call me when you get to 7:30!

Fortunatley, he took his first job with a fantastic company, Clif Bar. Working for Clif Bar is like working for Santa in Santa’s workshop! In place of Santa, it is Gary Erickson. There are countless employee benifits that this company provides, it is silly. The one I want to talk about is “the sabatical” After 7 years with the company, Clif gives the employee 3 months off, PAID. In addition to this, they allow you to take off an additional 3 months, unpaid! Needless to say, this came at an opportune time. Initially, I got Kenny out the door. After a month into his time away from Clif, I have had to put a tow rope onto the back of his bike. 168lbs down to 133… 3 pounds heavier than the good old days. Several 400-500 mi bike weeks along with just as many 40-50mi run weeks, the kid is back!!

How amped up is he? Not really. No pressure. He was planning on doing this event on his old QR with sub par equiptment. Thanks to DeSoto, Kuota, Fila, Slowman (he provided a light weight set of Reynolds) and others, Kenny is racing like a pro again! Although he used to get paid good dough from sponsors, he was happy as pigs in shit to get cutting edge products for free/loaner.

He will start his 8 Powerman Zofingen in about 8 hours. He won it 15 years ago. He raced this event every year until 1997, when he went to work for Clif Bar. Back then, I think the winner got $40k. Today the winner gets $10k. After aging and living a bit, Kenny is doing it for freedon and because “he can!” He does not have a wife, girl friend, or cat that gets pissed that he is training all day. The irony of the this story, is that his ex-wife, who hates triathletes and the sport, is getting re-married on the day he goes to battle in Zofingen! I guess both Kenny and the former Mrs. Souza will be celebrating tomorrow.

Kenny will be checking his email in the am before he heads off to the race. If are a Souza fan, send him an email wishing him well in his day of battle at Zofingen. I bet 100 Clif Bars that 100 emails from the slowtwitchers wishing him luck will put a smile on his face before he heads to the starting line.

Vote For SOUZA!

Done.

Looking forward to the report!

I hope Kenny puts together a perfect race for himself, it’d be interesting to see where that puts him in regards to Benny V.

Love the Souza…go man go!

t~

LOL, I read your post hoping to find out what had happened during the race that would cause him to cross the finish line after 8 hours, then I realized that it hadn’t even started!

Looking forward to finding out how he does, but it appears that it already is a victory for him to be at the start.

Oh, and email to Kenny following shortly!

Please tell Kenny good luck and remind him of how many athletes around the world he has inspired and thrilled. He is a fantastic athlete and a great personality.

GO SOUZA!!

Thanks Paul. This is so cool to have an icon of the sport like Souza back, “because he can”. All us old school guys will certainly be cheering him on. Totally awesome !

I will never forget 15 years ago dreaming or racing like Kenny - even wanted the NFS Alpha bike more than anything…he will always be my hero! I hope he kicks ass.

Guys,

Not sure how to read these results, but the MAN IS BACK

EliteM 23. Souza Kenny 64 USA-San Marcos, CA 7:23.08,3 52.07,0 (10)

Kudos to Kenny for having the guts to race elite after all these years off. In 1986, when I did my first half Ironman in Brattleboro Vermont, there was this kid/dude/punk who was way way way off the back after the swim (even behind me). Around 10K into the bike, I get blown over by this vortex. It was none other than Souza. He went something like 4:04 at the Green Mountain Steelman on a course that was tougher than Wildflower. Just amazing.

This is amazing. Glad to see the man back in the game !

Just to put things into perspective, he was still ahead of all the top women and less than an hour behind the winner Benny V.

I believe those mean, total time: 7:23:08.3 in American

52:07.0 minutes behind the winner

10 is the bib number I believe. (correction, on reflection, I take that back. I don’t know what the 10 is for)

Thanks Frank, I knew we needed a guy with a PhD and MD to interpret these results. Looks like the splits are not yet posted. You can see all the “S” participants here:

The splits were there when I went there. Looks like Benny needs to do some work as his second run splits weren’t the best. Or, he stopped for a taco or something.

Burrito.

Maybe a this is going to help you:

This is the elite division in Zofingen, ranked by how they came in. 35 Total Participants and Souza came in 23rd.

Not bad for a comeback but in another timezone nevertheless…

…not to beat up on Mr. Larsen who I have the utmost respect for and who I supported for racing as an age grouper, but it takes a lot of balls to come out of a decade long racing hiatus like Souza and jump back into the elite field. Seriously, he could have easily raced age group, but he chose to race pro and although he finished a “time zone behind”, it does not matter. He put his ass on the start line, gave it what he had, and finished ! Amazing.

For those who ever participated in the same race as him, and were actually ahead of him (possible in a tri), the man would blow by like he had Rolls Royce Turbofans attached to his bike. I know of many elite athletes, who have a tough time racing again, when they know they can’t quite match their previous prowess. You gotta give Souza credit showing his face in the elite field and hauling ass.
