I saw a statement somewhere that modern communication is essentially apologizing for a delayed response even though the response is being made within a reasonable amount of time.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. I read it yesterday when you first posted it, typed up a response, decided my response was inadequate so deleted it while trying to think of something more interesting to say. It then slipped my mind, I did other things, and completely forgot about it until I was scanning through all the posts while killing time and happened to see your post again. I really don’t have anything of substance to add, but waiting longer to respond will just make the situation worse for all of us so I will respond now with some half-assed reply that is meant only to buy me more time to think of a REAL response.
I have typed phrase (the title, not my own response) when responding to an email five hours after receiving it. How did business get done before the internet? Deals would have taken days, or even weeks to come together, where now if its not done in less than 60 minutes people get pissed off.
I am going to start adding some extra “context” to my responses now after reading your linked article. Some of those are great!
