After long hard rides the ligament on the side of my left leg is very, very sore. Almost to the point that the day after a ride is a mandatory day off. I’m wondering if this is a result of bad clip/shoe placement, weak inexperienced leg muscles, or normal?

.
ITB or is it in the knee or lower leg, be more specific.
Be a little more specific, left of the knee? ankle? thigh?
ITB? Sorry, it’s at the knee but not my knee…

I said left side of my leg which wouldn’t mean ankle. It’s at the knee on the left side of my left leg and as far as I know the main ligament in my leg…
The IT band goes down the outside of your thigh from your hip. past the trochanter which is the bump at the top your thigh bone to the outside of your knee. Pain at the outside of the knee can be from a tight IT band. I had it bad last season. It felt like an ice pick in the outside of my knee after riding. Ice, stretching, massage, and rest fixed it. The tennis ball treatment on those muscles between my pelvis and trochanter were the best thing I did.
