Does anyone else experience this…I get up in the morning, and seems like legs need a while to “lossen” up and feel better, there is no way i would want to go for a run in the morning, almost as if legs are still sleeping even though I am up and about…
Anyone here experienced with supplements etc for joints, that actually work, or is it mostly in your head and amounts to nothing more then snake oil.
I am ramping up my run workouts and have had some joint stress. Not a ton but enough that I know I am working them hard. I am about five days into a joint suppliment. More as prevention for me. I have never taken any suppliments before other than a multi vitamin. I have never been a believer in these suppliments but thought I would give it a try. It is supposed to take a week or so for noticeable positive effects. Give me a few more days and I will let you know if it works for me.
First, just to be clear I am not a doctor, nurse nothing like that. I am not giving any medical or nutritional advice. (anyone that puts anything in their body should get advice from a trusted nutritionalist, doctor, nurse, their mom, whatever… not from me) I am just a regular guy. So don’t do what I do.
(I hope that satisfies my wife, the family lawyer)

I looked at each item individually. The list represents almost everything over the counter that I could easily identify that claims to help with inflamation and joint relief. None of them have a history of negative side effects and I included them at the dossage that has been generally recommended. I asked someone I trusted if there would be any interaction issues if these items were combined and was convinced it would not be an issue.
Some of the stuff has been used by a lot of people for many years others not so much. It may be like vitamins; mostly down the drain; I don’t know but I didn’t want to spend a lot of effort trying each one individually.
It will either help on it won’t.
Now that I think of it maybe I should just use the Michael Phelps blend after every run…then I won’t care if it hurts. LOL
A lot of these things have a short half life, so at best could provide temporary help. Glucosamine and condroitin when compared to placebos was found only beneficial in the liquid formula. A lot of the formulations have a lot of sugar in them, as well.
Early 40’s…run in evening cause I feel to sluggish, or sore in the mornings…maybe its because I run in the evenings, dont run long tho…say 30 min or so…and very slowly as trying to become a better runner aerobically…
Can you describe how you feel in the mornings? You didn’t specifically say if you were having joint pain or simply muscle tightness.
The closer to bed time you run the more pronounced your tightness and/or soreness will be in the mornings. This feeling can be contributed to by dehydration which itself is contributed to by caffeine consumption. If you take a decent amount of caffeine you may benefit from avoiding it for a week to assess how you feel. If you don’t improve, then caffeine’s not an issue…but do make sure you rehydrate well after your evening runs.
Do you feel much of a difference between mornings when you ran the day before and didn’t?
Are you running daily? every other day? How long have you been running this much? it’s likely that you are simply in the adaptation phase and this will work itself out as you get acclimated.
If it is joint strains you have you need to ensure you are drinking plently of water as this greatly contributes to the making of synovial fluid (fluid which surrounds the joints).
Keep topped up on your essential saturated fats and fatty acids which are found in good olive oils and oily fish. I always prefer these to supplements as you knwo exactly what your getting for your money.
If you have muscle soreness on the other hand this is a different ball game and you should evaluate your recovery process which can be enhanced through diet.
I have pretty much the same problem and have given up running in the mornings. I’m trying to stretch for at least 5min in the am and making sure I’m well warmed and stretched before and after runs. I’m trying sitting in the tub with ice after long runs and bricks, it helps decrease inflammation. The other thing you can try is using recovery socks or compression stockings to sleep. They’re the same ones used for varicose veins or when you’re in the hospital. The supplements might help, you can give them a try and see.
Some things to consider in excessive morning soreness: mileage increases, age, hypothyroidism, food sensitivities, poor nutrition/timing. Just to name a few. MSM, glucosamine, & chondroitin are all found to be effective.
It’s called “old age,” my dear! With respect to knee pain/stiffness, I have had the very same problem (with increasing levels of discomfort) for the past ten years, starting when I was your age. When the pain gets too intense I shut down my running and take a series of three injections of hylauronic acid in each knee capsule. It’s magic. Hylauronic acid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber inside your joint. There are several commercially available brands. Each has its pluses and minuses. Within 48 hours of my first set of shots I’m back on the road, albeit at a reduced pace and volume until the three-shot sequence is completed. From beginning to end, each three-shot series is performed over a two-week period. I do this four times a year. I try to time my shots around my race schedule. This may not be right for you. Consult your othro. Good luck.
A agree with the Chipster. I am 58 years old and every morning when I climb out of bed I walk around like I am about 80. Then slowly the old bones loosen up and I begin to feel better. I always perform some dynamic stretches before heading out on a morning run and take the first mile easy. Then I am good to go.
And depending on how hard I run and ride that day, I get up the next morning and replicate the process with varying degrees of stiffness.

Agreed. Dynamic stretching is clutch. I sometimes do it before I go to bed too. I use a rope so I don’t have to bend too much to grab a limb. I use the Wharton technique. http://www.aistretch.com/index.html This site can get you more information.

You neglected quinine. You could wash all that down with a glass of tonic water.
fegirl, you didn’t specifically say whether your pain and stiffness was more in your knees/joints or in your muscles/tendons.
