Something going on here in Madison's Craiglist (Bikes)

It seems we have a good Samaritan who feels obligated to appraise some bike listings on our local Craigslist. If you want to check out the listings, here is the links:

but in the meantime here are a few of his/her thoughts - - -

SAFETY WARNING

Um, that “ding” looks suspiciously like a crease caused by any number of mistreatments of the bicycle and if it is a crease, the frame and probably the fork should never be ridden.
If you are interested in the bike mentioned, please have a bicycle professional inspect the bike for safety. http://images.craigslist.org/3na3kd3peZZZZZZZZZ93aa3277a1000351607.jpg http://images.craigslist.org/3mf3ob3lcZZZZZZZZZ93abbf6922c0c621cec.jpg

Buy a bike a couple decades ago, take a bunch of parts OFF of the bike, and that makes it worth MORE than when it was new?

Pretty sure Fantasyland found their new mayor.

I know, I know; Its probably “vintage”.

Okay, so the bike isn’t anything special, but it looks NEW and anything in museum quality condition deserves some props. If it had all the original components and in museum condition I could say that $500 would be fair, but as the bike stands it’s a sweet commuter or decoration that needs a longer brake cable housing and probably more.
As a decoration I might be willing to pay $300, but as a commuter no more than $200 and the bike really should have at least one more brake, or never be ridden on wet roads.

Wow - an ‘original condition’ bike with most of the drivetrain components and half the brakes removed! Is that a cottered crank? Steel rims: who likes stopping in wet conditions anyway? And the price - probably only $375 more than this bike cost when new, so it’s a good deal.

Alright, I’ve seen this listed a few times and it’s finally gotten to the point where I need to say something. I’m not implying the $2,300 is a bad deal for this frameset. What I do have a problem with is the idea that the buyer would be getting this great $3,200+ deal for $2,300.

The frame does NOT retail for $2,900. Matter of fact, the frame+seatpost+fork sells for…$2,599.

So this valuation that your posting is misleading. Again, I’m not saying that your frameset isn’t worth $2,300. Value is in the eyes of the buyer.
