Someone stole my bike!

It was just my commuter bike, an old trek mountain bike, but I’ve had it for years and “Rusty” and I had a deep bond. Now I have to try to replace it which is going to be hard… I left it parked out side of the reain station and when my boyfriend went to pick it up it was gone! Has anyone had any luck with their insurance companies? I did report it to the police but I’m sure that this is a useless battle to fight. I can’t get over my state of depression, it’s just been a day, I’m hoping by this weekend I’ll be myself again.

How much was the bike worth? Based on your description (old), it might not be worth the deductible. Either way, I feel for you. Having a bike stolen is like a kick in the balls.

My mountain bike was stolen from the side of my friend’s house a couple of years ago. Insurance paid, no problem. Now, when I see kids around the neighborhood on Mt. Bikes, I look to see if it’s my old bike ( a bottle of iced tea was left behind, leads me yo think some kid was just walking by). the only thing that really pissed me off was that I had a kind of unique seat bag attached to it, I had it for several years and couldn’t replace it.

Well, like I said, it wasn’t worth too much becuase it was older, but to replace it it would be proally at least $200 (I don’t want some crappy Target bike). However, it was in good shape, I had actually just scoured the whole bike, oiled it and got it set for another year of commuting up the bluffs to school…

a friend of mine had his bike, and his sister’s bikes (2) stolen from his garage one day. (he also had one stolen from a bike shop the year before). Anyway, insurance ponied up maybe 80% of the value?

almost a year later he gets a call from the police: we found one of your bikes! (it was gutted, and all the parts had been replaced to lower spec) but they gave it to him anyway. As far as I know its still sitting on his basement floor waiting to be used…

I had a mountain bike stolen out of my garage once. I reported it to the police and homeowners covered the cost. A YEAR later I was at a local deli and there was a kid on my bike! I grabbed him, called the cops, and got my bike back.

If you recover your bike like that, would your insurance company want their money back? I would guess so, but I don’t know.

This thread got me curious so I just looked up renters’ insurance rates for my zip code: $10k of coverage (replacement cost) for $219 a year with a $250 deductible (they also offered $20k and $50k). I called them and asked if that would cover my bike being stolen from work or a convenience store, and they said that as long as I lock it, yes.

Not bad I guess, but I don’t know much about insurance.

maybe it wasnt really stolen and you just left it in your jacket pocket…that happened to me once with my wallet…

Well see if any of my other bikes were stolen my parent’s homeowner’s insurance would have helped me out too, but since this bike couldn’t have been worth more than 250 (the same as the deductible) I guess that I am outta luck.

I guess it is time to start to look on EBAY.

I was planning to nick a triathlon bike, but that crappy one was there. Send me a message if you want it bak.

From TriGirl621: I left it parked out side of the reain station and when my boyfriend went to pick it up it was gone!

From Stallion: Having a bike stolen is like a kick in the balls.

Probably a bad analogy.

I’m easily amused but, I think that was very funny!

I beg to differ… it is an excellent analogy. When you get a kick in the balls your blood pressure drops and you get sick to your stomach and nauseous. This is oddly similar to the sick to your stomach feeling that you get when you realize something you love is now gone. The fact that she is a female only makes the analogy all the more effective. Now she knows how it feels to get a swift kick to the jimmy-jank, and will avoid doing so to her boyfriend OR use it effectively in an emergency situation.

In one deft manuever I have successfully related the pain of a kick in the balls to women while teaching them self defense!

Um… OK! I’ll buy that!

NEVER take your EYES off your bike!!!
.

Be careful with that. An insurance agent likely has NO idea what the value of a “bike” is (thinking Target or WalMart here).

When I got my renters policy, and asked about specific coverage for my bikes, he asked the value. When I told him, the silence at the other end of the phone told me all I needed to know. When he finally came back with the premium, it was exorbitant. So I asked about them being covered under tha basic policy, and after talking with the parent company reps, they’d cover the bikes as long as I could produce the original receipts (yeah, right). But when I asked about what would be covered, it came down to: Stolen from the apartment, or destroyed in a fire (in the apartment). So check that policy carefully.

We got a picture of Spin Doctor on your bike:

He’s modified it a little as you can see.

Where did you get that from?

Yes, I installed a white industries ENO hub and converted it to a fixed wheel training machine. I am trying to kill that famous dead spot and develop a better spinning action. Better than that Mr Tingley California Cranks that rotor stuff for you.

Your mother.

You’ll never kill that dead spot between your ears.

Typically your home owners or renters policy will cover “replacement cost.” The trick here is that you must buy the bike and submit the receipt to be reimbursed.

I had no issues with my insurance company and I made a claim for a Kestrel KM40 and Kestrel 200 EMS that were stolen out of my garage. The insurance company paid (in full) for my replacement bikes (Litespeed Vortex and QR Tiphoon). So you should have no problems.

PM me if you have any questions.
