Most impressive 100 ever was Ben Johnson’s 1988 final … 9.79 with his hand in the air and shutting it down over the final metres. It took a long time before anyone else even came close to that performance drugs or not. As for Montgomery not being as impressive as Mo because he’s likely doped up … the cynic in me says that if anyone in that final was on the juice, Mo was the one. He did run a solid race today though and since they’re all probably doped up it was a level playing field.
Yes, ass handed to him. Its a 100m dash, not a 10k. You lose, you have your ass handed to you. And by a relatively inexperienced 22 year old, no less.
You cannot simply compare a straight up list of runs and come up with the “greatest of all time” moniker. Look at how his runs stack up against his contemporaries. Then look at Carl Lewis. Then look at Jesse Owens. You’ll see that they dominated at least as much, and, in Owens’s case, more than Mo Greene ever has. 37 sub 10 runs only supports his self-given “GOAT” moniker if his winning percentage against his opponents is also greater than the others. I think you’ll find he comes up a bit short here.
Gracious loser? That remains to be seen. And while losing graciously looks favorable on a person, WINNING graciously looks even better. And Mo Green has NEVER won graciously. Now I’ll grant you CL was rarely a gracious loser. But Owens’s humility was a model for all, whether in winning or losing.

Good points, that was a great run by Ben but it is tainted. Also looking at TM runs he had the max wind speed for a few of his runs. The fastest run ever was 9.67 I think but it had over 2.0 m/s wind and was at over 5000ft. Most impressive sprint ever is by far MJ’s 200 WR. That was just sick.
Mo has been the most solid 100m runner ever. He has a boatload of fast times, has been doing it for a while and has never ducked testing, races or other athletes. He would get my vote as best 100m runner ever.
I would point to Gatlin as the drug suspect. Not that I think that he is juced, but if you told me that one finalist was on drugs, I would guess Gatlin. His bests before this Olympic showing were a lot slower than he ran here (9.92) and he has never shown to be a “great” spriner until now.
One truly sad commentary on all of this is that all of us are wondering which ones, if not all of them, are on drugs. Sad, sad, sad.

Hmmm, well let’s hope that’s true because he never seemed like a gracious winner. Sort of in your face when he won IMO. I was actually glad to see him lose for that reason.
Greene is one thing, but the other two Americans showboating in the semi-final is the type of stuff that turns me off of sprinters. Was it Greene who used the fire extinguisher on his shoes? That stuff makes me sick to my stomach that they’re wearing the U.S. uniform.

just seems arrogant to me, but maybe I do not understand the mentality involved in sprinting…
I used to hang out with a lot of Varsity track athletes, and they were pretty unanimous that to truly excel as a sprinter, you had to be one arrogant mofo. This of course trickles down so that they guys who “want” to run 100 but barely make the cutoff times are just as arrogant, of not worse than the fastest guys out there. Contrast this to the 110 hurdler, the 400 hurdler, and the XC runners I also hung out with who were very modest, but could throw down with the best of 'em.
Sprinters are a unique breed, but something about either enormous amount of pressure/publicity on the event, or the environment they train in tends to make them that way.
I’m not saying that modest sprinters don’t exist, however I am suggesting that they are in the great minority. Although I admit that the sample size is tiny, every single sprinter I’ve ever met has been pretty damn arrogant (not a bad person, just arrogant).
Not just running either. Gary Hall Jr. is pretty cocky too. For whatever reason, the very best seem to be that way.
I think a lot of the sprinters are mostly for show at the pool or on the track more than off it. I don’t have anything against Hall, but I was disappointed in his attitude about the first relay.
There’s a fine line between cockiness and arrogance. Mo Green doesn’t just cross that line, he LIVES on the arrogant side. Truly great athletes know when winning is enough, and losing is an opportunity to be humble. Mo ain’t great in my book. F’n talented. F’n fast. But not great.
After he won the 50free he was asked about the 400 relay, you could tell he wanted to go off. However, he took his time and gave a pretty diplomatic answer. I think he handled himself pretty well there.
Yeah, he did ok, right after he won the Gold in another race. But on the relay night, he wouldn’t even come to watch the race and support the guys who were swimming. Bad form.
LOL.
But NBC did deliver the entire 10 seconds. Credit where credit is due.
