Wetsuits and river swim make for a nice combo.
from my very unstatistical analysis, it looks like the later the wave, the faster the swim time from what you would expect. Current probably increased as the day went on.
A friend who was doing the race expected a upstream current… maybe they shortened the swim or added a run as part of the first leg, like at IM China.
Two middle of the pack swimmers I know were each about 10 minutes faster than I would have expected on the swim. Several age groupers sub 20 minutes, including a 40-44 male who swam 19:44. That’s fast.
yeah just saw a buddies swim split and he went 29:43.
His fastest olympic swim this year in a wetsuit was 33:30, so they either got it real short or the current was raging because of all he rain. He was in the 40-44 masters so I believe his wave was quite late.
x4 My coach is out there today who isnt much of a swimmer and did it in 25 minutes.
I had a buddy that was racing tell me on Friday that they were opening up the dam sometime soon to let some water out…meaning more current. From the swim times, I say it’s true!
i volunteered, so i got to see a lot of the swimmers go by. even the breast- and side- strokers were hauling ass in that current. it was a little funny to see people pause to try to catch their breath and still move a body length in the water.
I’m normally a 27 minute 1.2mi swimmer, and today I swam a 22:04. Fast, indeed. Swim was really a non-issue, but then at IM and 1/2 IM distances, it doesn’t count for much, anyway.
Them gators had everyone motivated!
Seems like once the swim was over, the bike and run times weren’t all that fast. I’m judging based on a bunch of friends who did the race and who shared their target times. Pretty much none of them beat their targets. I know it was a blustery day.
The current made the swim the equivalent of about 1500m.
I’m usually about 19-20 mins in oly’s and I was 20 and change here.
Definitely. I am in the 18-24 AG and if you look at our times we all crushed the swim, had an average bike, and COMPLETELY crumbled on the run. We started the run about 11:30 and I really wasn’t expecting it to heat up that quickly, and I definitely paid for it.

yea pretty much the story of my day. sun came out as i got off the bike…not my best run.
Swim was very fast…however next time I may change to a different color wetsuit. After about ten minutes in…i was bit and death rolled by a 10 foot gator. I guess he thought i was a giant beaver. Luckily i stashed a bowie knife in my tights and was able to fight my way off the cold, dark bottom of the river. After a few stitches in the med tent I was able to continue for a decent finish.
Well coordinated race, great volunteers and post race event.
it was AWESOME! lol Oceanside i pulled a 34 min swim here i rocked a 24! lol
