SOMA in October

Can anyone give me info on this race? Looks similar in area to IMAZ. Hills on run or bike?

I really want to know usual time of sell out, but I presume that too much to ask for.

thanks,

Trisha

Supposed to be flat as a pancake. Also supposed to be a very well run, very good race. Had a friend do it last year and he gave RAVE reviews. I am doing it this year with him. Sorry I only have 2nd hand info…

did the race last year and it was fantastic. no hills on either the bike or run, but the run was a little warm…tempe is hot in october. the swim was pretty nice as well. would love to do it again…

I’m in!

I did it in '03, and as I understand it the course has changed some. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the bike was as flat as a pancake - but it was pretty darn flat. The run was (is?) as flat as a pancake.

I’m really looking forward to it this year.

Trish,

It’s a fun, fast race.

Mike

just remember to be prepared for a wide variety of temps. Can range from 65 to 100 for a high. See you there.

I did this race last year, it was well organized and really fun.

Swim in tempe town lake, the water was about 65 degrees one lap around, pretty straight forward.

The bike is pretty much flat but where you can bite you is on the last long stretch is up a false flat for a good long time until the turn around. Last year the wind was in your face going out and up this false flat and at your back on the way back into tempe. I removed the 11-23 and put on an 11-25 thinking I may need the bigger cassette for hills. Didn’t need it at all.

Run is two loops around tempe town lake, which is a series of streets, paved paths and dirt trails. the hardest part (IMO) is the dirt path that isn’t wide enough for the amount of people and the short steep climb up the side of the embankment of an over pass.

I have no idea when it sold out last year, but I’m planning on signing up again this year after I get a race under my belt. I’m trying to get over an injury and don’t want to sign up till I know I’ll be able to do it.

thanks everryone. I have a call into the race people to get an estimate on the close out time.

I did it last year - good race. Seemed quite fast - a PR course. I thought last year was the 1st year. I did the half IM (or is it 70.3 now?) - there is also a “Quarterman” = 35.15.

Swim - I did 2 loops so maybe I did an extra loop? There were only a few waves and every wave had to swim through or be swum over by another wave (i.e. - all waves were kinda fair). I was in the 1st wave and had to swim through wave#2 on my 2nd lap. Swim seemed a tad slow.

T- short run - T in grass. Not too many people so small T. Nice. They had wetsuit strippers (only race I’ve done with such).

Bike - false flat with head wind out - much faster on the way back. Several 90 degree turns - 3 180’s I think on each lap. 2 laps. Drafting may be an issue if there’s more racers…roads a tad rough in places (not bad). No climbs - I used a 11-23 - its a 99.9% aero-bar course. 2 laps.

Run - flat except tiny 15 foot climbs…some dirt - some bike path - some roads. Warm but did not seem hot at all. 2 laps.

I Pr’d the bike/run/overall so I had fun!!! I ran really well for me - not sure what that means - did not seem short (I hope). I’d go back in a second. Decent post-race food/beer. Very easy logistics. Is tayed at the host hotel - more than acceptable and easy access except we had a 3 a.m. fire alarm…

It did not fill last year.

Dave

cool…it did not fill last year? That is good news for me…thanks much!

Seal, Soma is the big race for Arizona and it seemed like everyone did it around here last year and they had a lot of good things to say about the event. The Quarterman sold out last year right away but the half didn’t sell out. The B-Line highway on the bike is tricky, because it looks flat, but the in fact, it can be tough especially with wind. The run course is all around the Tempe Town Lake just like Ironman Arizona. The race is a great season ender.

thanks zonie.

good to know.

What ST’ers are going to be there by the way?

I’ll be there and I’ll be fast. So lookout! If you believe in daily affirmations help me chant: I’m going 5 hours. I’m going 5 hours. I’m going 5 hours.

Does that count as a training session?

Brian from St Louis

I’ll be there. Sporting the brand new QR wetsuit. (thanks again herbert)
