SOMA half ironman bike/run course

Anybody have info on this course they could share? The link on their website is not working. Thanks.

well its pretty fast. its flat, going over the bridge is as much of a hill as you are going to get. its a really well run race so youll enjoy it. run is pretty flat as well. youll have to run on a hard packed dirt trail for a bit of it, but like is said its fast. for the bike there are a couple of 180 turns which is annoying and it does get pretty crowded.

Good post. I’m racing Soma(half). I assume you’re also racing. I was wondering about the water.

the water is mostly wet, with a composition of h2o. I would say the swim course is mostly flat with 4 turns but they arent very tecnical…

LMAO, I see you are handling taper well. This must be the Paulo influence.

Good! I was worried we would have swim in the sand. I did not know if swimming in the sand was wetsuit legal.

ok…enought smartass…for me!

the water is warm at that time of the year…but for some reason, they make it wetsuit legal even if it as no reason to be! But it s a very easy swim of course as it s a giant pool!!! no wave and a few set of stairs as you come out of the water…like ironman AZ

when you think about it, kind of boring that swimming never as any hills!!! always the same!!!

I don’t believe I have ever seen jonnyo not make a serious post. Classic day! Good luck with your IMC race!

Soma is a great race. The swim is in Tempe Town Lake which is not the most inviting body of water as the so-called ‘lake’ is more like a canal. It’s so murky you can’t see your arm in front of you when swimming and you may see some dead fish along the way.
The previous posts explained the bike and run course very well!
Just hope for an overcast forecast and it should be a great day!

I was not clear in my post(pre morning coffee). I was thinking of water quality.

Good luck at IMC.

i didnt had any coffee so it s probably me that is clueless!!!

oh well…water quality…, Soma as a guarrenty policy… they guarrenty you that the water will be terrible with at least 5 death fish by 10feet square and some other suspect deposit in the water!!!

but it s a fun race overall… i had tons of fun last year and it s one of the fastest course there is…

Hey I am considering doing the SOMA 1/2 this year. Is it still pretty hot around that time of the year or does it start to cool off by then.

Do you still run an out & back on that crazy construction road? I did the race in '04 and '06 and I didn’t remember anything like that in '04. That was tough on the feet, especially the second time through.

Otherwise, it is a great, well run race. My only complaint was because my AG was the last swim wave, there were WAY too many people out on the bike course at one time. We were relegated to one traffic lane and it was extremely congested and downright scary in a few places.

Odds are the highs will be in the 80’s. But it could be 95+ or even 100 race day.

Ok, thanks. So I guess the best thing would be for me to train and assume it will be hot and if not then I luck out. I will have to do some training runs and rides in Palms Springs I guess.

I have done that race 3x and am going again this year, I don’t think that The weather has been that warm any of the times I have been there, except maybe 2004…or maybe thats because I only trained for a month and was racing with a case of PF. But anyways, I think last year, I finished and the temps were in the low 80s and I didn’t exactly set the course on fire (5:15). What the other people say about the bike course is true, there are some scary sections, but for the most part, the ride is very fast, I did a 2:37 there last year with little training. The swim is nice, the water is a bit gross, but being able to see the bridges and buildings makes sighting really easy. The run is ok, it is two laps with a short out and back and its mostly on concrete, but again, its pan flat except for a few 5-10 foot tall hills on the walkways.

In 04, the wind was more of an issue as the ride went out towards the b-line (plus I was under-prepared). It is a great race, well run and it is a fast course, im looking to PR there this year. FWIW, the finishers medals leave something to be desired and I think that it sucks that the 1/2 shirt is the same as the 1/4 shirt, but whatever, it would be hard to find a better race in the southwest that time of year.

thanks, I think I am going to sign up for it as I have a cousin that lives in the Phoenix area.

So I guess the best thing would be for me to train and assume it will be hot and if not then I luck out.

Looks like a warm week, just ride the SA river trail or the Canyon.

BTW: I’m also racing Soma.

Yeah, I will be riding Santiago Canyon on Saturday.
