Solid rear wheel and bike racks, transport

Considering a rear wheel cover for my bike, my question though is how do you transport this on your roof rack if the loop is not able to go through the rear wheel, huge bungies ?

good example below of the rear loop I am referring to.

Not sure I’d want a solid wheel on a roof rack… you might never see your bike again.

Use a spare wheel while transporting it.

Training wheel or just buy a wrecked wheel from a shop. If you have a local shop they will likely give you a bad wheel for free.

I could probably strap down my disc wheel through the valve opening hole, but you say I’m going to lose my bike due to the wind?

I don’t think you’ll lose it (I have done this with a wheel cover before), but it would probably be safer to use a training wheel and keep the disk in the trunk.

Isn’t this why pick-up trucks were invented?

I would not carry a disk or covered wheel on a roof (or trunk) rack. With the roof rack a cross wind will put stress on the bike and rack that they were not designed to handle. Use a different wheel for transport and make the switch at race site. It never hurts to have extra wheels along anyway.

I do it all the time. Had to cut the opening in the CH Aero cover slightly larger for convenience. I rotate the cover slightly so that it is not aligned with the tube valve and works fine. One of the advanages of a wheel cover as opposed to a “real” disc wheel.

Digging up this post from a while back about transporting a bike with a disc cover instead of starting a new one. Do you guys typically just switch the cassette over when you get to the race or do you have a spare that you put on the spare wheel? I have some old wheels, but unfortunately no old cassettes lying around. It just seems like it’d be a PITA to switch the cassette over on race morning with all of the other running around I’m already doing.

you dont need the casette on the spare wheel for the purposes of attaching it to the car.
