Soldier Shot In Ottawa - unfolding

I listen to CBC radio on my way to work. Got in the car this morning & thought, “WTF”?

I love our neighbors to the north, having done extensive business in Toronto, Winterpeg, and Vancouver.

But anyone that says that Canada doesn’t suffer from the same sick, criminal shit that the United States does, hasn’t perused the various headlines in the link you posted.

Holy shit. Soldiers shot with rifles, babies’ remains found in lockers, and a woman beaten to death on a bike path. And that is just what’s above the virtual fold.

Criminals exist. Everywhere.

So yes, if you read the headlines in any Canadian paper you will find criminal activity every day. I don’t know anyone who denies that we have criminals.

I live in downtown Ottawa, just across from the police station. Was late heading into work this morniing, ~10:10 and saw many cops on the street and the Ottawa Police SWAT truck. Saw a couple of ambulances. Wondererd WTF was going on.

CBC is reporting that one, possibly 2 people. One guy shot one of the soldiers on guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the war memorial, then ran towards Parliament Hill, entered the building. An eye witness reported that there was another person dressed like the shooter ( same type of bandana covering his face ).

They were doing CPR on the soldier as they loaded him into the ambulance, not good.

More shots were reported in the center block, 30 to 50. RCMP SWAT is on the scene, situation is still fluid as now the cops say that the shooter was headed towards the Chateau Laurier ( a hotel just east of parliament hill ) with the cops telling a reporter that there may be a shooter on the roof of the hotel.

An MP has tweeted that the suspect was shot and killed.

Police have not confirmed this.

“Gunman at Parliament’s Centre Block has been shot and killed,” said Etobicoke-Lakeshore MP Bernard Trottier on Twitter on Tuesday morning.
Police haven’t confirmed the suspect’s death.

A witness says that someone was hit by a bullet on Queen St. ( west of the war memorial and one block south of Parliament hill )

Police are stating that the downtown area is not safe and that the situation has not been resolved - sounds like more than one shooter - but until the cops give an all clear.

Cell phones not working in downtown area, whether a load issue or a security measure is unclear.

Canadian Press is reporting that Police suspect 2 or 3 shooters on Parliament hill and that the Sergeant at Arms of the House of Commons ( ex RCMP, keeps a pistol in his office shot one dead. CBC says that one shooter dead. But since that event more shots fired.

JTF2 ( Armed Forces Special Forces/Anti-terrorist unit, our SAS or SEALs ) on scene.

If they suspect that there are more than one shooter then cell service was likely requested to be cut off.

I think they did that in Boston.

I’m pretty sure at least one bad guy is dead:

If not, our security forces are terrible shots.

We should probably start locking our doors!

Oh shit Canada - You need stricter gun control laws. Looks like the ones you have aren’t working. http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/22/world/americas/canada-ottawa-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

I’m not so sure. Guy walked up to a soldier in ceremonial uniform with an antique, non functioning, not loaded gun, shoots said soldier point blank, makes his way into the parliament building and is killed by the Sargeant At Arms, who is the chief of all parliamentary security. Later another guy is shot. So: bad guys shoot one defenseless person, and both get killed. How would other gun laws have changed that outcome you think?

There are reports of more than one suspect. That implies a organized, planned attack - possibly by a terrorist or anti-military group.

At the very least a small group inspired by ISIL.

These people have made a mistake. Canada is not Spain, we do not back down from a fight. If anything shit like this will solidify support for the Canadian participation in the action against ISIL.

With stricter gun laws, the soldier would not have been shot to begin with. At the very least, they need to add a “no gun zone” sign to prevent this from ever happening again. If nothing else, do it for the children.

Wut? How so? Or am I misreading your sarcasm? I think I know you as a staunch proponent of civilian carriage, no? . Nevermind. Reading fail.

Seriously, I don’t think any proponent of gun control claims that measures like that prevent the actions of lunatics or terrorists.

Or… this attack is a direct result of choosing to participate in attacks against ISIL.
Foreign wars do not equal domestic security…

Or it’s a bunch of nutjobs with a completely different political agenda.

Either way, Trudeau is in over his head. Right?

Another incident confirmed at the Rideau Center - a mall about 1km east of Parliament Hill
.

Yeah, but it’s the same logic they used in Chicago.

They banned all guns and still had the highest murder rate so to “solve” it, they decided to outlaw bullets because the gun ban did not work.

I could not believe the guy said this outloud much less in front of a crowd and on TV.

The murder rate is down in Chicago but there is nobody pointing out that the murder rate should be up since the gun ban was lifted. The reality is that the rate is down compared to a few years back only due to weather conditions.

It was unseasonably warm which provided more outdoor shooting days to the normal gangland shooting season.
