Is it legal for USAT races?
I believe the helmet is CPSC approved. I’m not sure if the helmets actually have the sticker (since specialized might not bother putting the stickers on the helmet, considering it’s only available to pros); the helmets that I’ve seen don’t seem to have it.
It is written “Complies with US Consumer Product Safety Comission Safety Standard For Bicycle Helmets for Persons Age 5 and Older”.
I don’t know how to know whether it is sufficient for USAT races but at least, it is CPSC approved.
Here is a question off a USAT race F.A.Q. Sheet. Looks like the Specialized helmet is OK.
Q. Are there specifications for the bike, helmets, and wetsuits?
A. Yes, the bike helmet must be CPSC certified. Most helmets purchased
in the US within the last 2-3 years are certified. Please confirm this by
checking for a sticker indicating its certification on the inside of the
helmet.
So, it’s fine for USAT race since there is the sticker.
The Mecca Helmet! ![]()
Good luck selling it. I wish i had the Dough.

Not CPSC certified, which is why you can’t get them from your Specialized dealer in the states.
So not Tri-legal, but USA Cycling legal for now (due to the Euro cert.).
Nice helmet though.
That’s wrong, it is CSPC certified. It is written in it… and I can take a photo if you want… so, you should make sure of what you say before saying it ![]()
This helmet isn’t available because Specialized doesn’t want to sell it…
I must have gotten bad information directly from Specialized, who is going through testing right now on the helmet.
I don’t know what sticker you are looking at, or what you think it means but your are wrong. And you are wrong in a way that misleads buyers to your benefit.
And honestly “Specialized doesn’t want to sell it?” Does that even seem plausible? Of course not. The information I got is the Specialized is going through the testing now.
Did you buy that helmet in the US from a Specialized retailer? Of course not. They still don’t offer them (even though they offer EVERY other model):

I would suggest interested parties ask Specialized directly- but in the interests of not hijacking the thread I will step out.
well,
I prefer a picture than false informations. Don’t say I stuck it myself on the helmet…

I don’t mislead people. You are confusing “misleading people like if I were a swindler” with defense of the truth.
My bad- I am stunned you already got one of the rare tested helmets rode it and are selling it. The Euro spec helmets are much more common.
Good luck with your sale.
CPSC approval doesn’t mean that the helmet is safe enough for Specialized to take to the market. CPSC approval doesn’t account for potential injury that a long tail could cause in the event of an accident (and the Specialized helmet has one of the longest tails for a TT helmet).
I believe Specialized normally seeks SNELL approval for their helmets as well, and could be pursuing it for this helmet.
I don’t understand what you are talking about. I mean, are you partial ???
Are you a helmet seller ???
Because as far as I know, I have had many aero helmets and this one has the same kind of tail as the Bell Meteor or the Giro Advantage. So why are you talking about potential injuries and so on ??? I mean, is it just to frighten the potential buyers ???
You should also post on each giro advantage or bell meteor ad that customers could be hurt by the tail of the helmet…
I have the same helmet, and I’ve raced it before. No, I’m not a helmet seller.
It’s a big helmet, with a long tail (significantly longer than other aero helmets), and hence, there are potential liability issues with it. In the event of a crash, a normal helmet is gonna be safer than a helmet with a tail. I’m not trying to frighten potential buyers… almost all aero helmets carry the same warning, saying that they should not be used under any circumstances other than a race.
I like this helmet very much myself, and it’s one of the more aerodynamic helmets out there, provided it’s used in the right position with the right rider. It’s very rare, and so I’m always surprised when I see one of them on sale.
oh, ok, well, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Actually, I measured the Spe and the Bell Meteor and they are exactly the same length ![]()
Yeah, cos you have the smaller version of the helmet. (=
Two versions exist, a larger version and a smaller (newer) version. The smaller version has shorter and smaller vents, mostly because the large vents of the previous helmet totally wrecked the aerodynamics of the helmet. Simply put, if Cadel Evans had taped his helmet vents in TDF '07 (he used the larger Specialized helmet then), he would have won the tour that year.
Hope this helmet sells… it’s totally worth the price. Considering everybody in the protour uses it nowadays…
