anyone ever try it? I know of people using it for rowing/swimming… i know that tri’s are supposedly a bit long, but anyone have first hand experience from other sports?
yeah you’re probably going to end up crapping/vomiting all over yourself if you try to use it in anything long. I’ve talked to sprinters that have used it and its other effects are not so fun
A Big Red (south Texas bottled brand) is standard fair for centuries and will be part of my special needs bag for CdA. I’ve had to cut back on the size, though, as I find myself growing less tolerant of high fructose corn syrup.
for my body weight it works out to 5 teaspoons of soda, which seems like a crazy amount. of friends who have done it for indoor rowing, they’ve PB’ed by about 5 seconds over 2km… nothing to sneeze at. I wonder what the maximum length of race is for it to still be effective?
I have never heard of this, so I googled it and this is what I found:

Soda loading Symptoms: Constipation Convulsions Diarrhea Feeling of being full Frequent urination Irritability Muscle spasms Muscle weakness Vomiting Reviewed last on: 10/24/2007 Stephen C. Acosta, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, Portland VA Medical Center, Portland, OR. Review provided by VeriMed Healthcare Network.
constipation and diarrhoea at the same time? now there’s a fun day at the office…
It just doesn’t sound fun…
the thing with possible side effects are just that, they’re possible. I know of the 4 people i know who have done it, only one has had an issue. I’m not sure why it happens to some and not others… sucks to be the one in four i guess
What is the science behing it? I am not sure if the bi-carbonate is supposed to delay muscle fatigue? Excuse my ignorance, I have heard of a lot of different “enhancers for preformance”, but I have never heard of soda loading.
supposed to provide the body with more materials to neutralize/uptake lactate
intended for anaerobic performance
studies show mixed results (some show none, some show impossible large improvements)
like most physiology studies, sample sizes and controls are insufficient to know anything ![]()
.
For exercise that last longer than 3-4 minutes, soda loading is not gonna help much.

Thanks. I do not like not being in the know on these things. In my wrestling days our coach made us dring a honey and vinegar concoction that was supposed to help us during matches. I think that it just left such a bad taste in the mouth that is pissed you off!!! It just may have worked.
i try to remind myself not to bother with anything but pedaling harder and running more until I can hold 25mph for an ironman and run a sub 3 hour marathon
but I like science stuff so I get sucked in sometimes
haha
.
I kind of do the same thing. I think about buying a set of Aero wheels and carbon bars to go faster, then I think " just lose 15 pounds" it is a lot less expensive!!!
I assume you mean sodium bicarb or similar and not Coke or Pepsi.
That was the subject of my masters’ thesis (not the pop kind). I’m a little fuzzy on total details as it was in 1986/87, but we used middle and long distance runners (and one triathlete) running on the treadmill. Let’s just say, the results were not overwhelmingly positive. I’ll have to dig up the document. There may be a ACSM abstract somewhere as the Ph.D. student who helped with the testing did a presentation at the ACSM meetings.

I think that it is sodium phosphate. http://www.poweringmuscles.com/Sports-Science-12,Sodium_Phosphate_Loading_Improves_Cycling_Performance.html

Yup - still marketed/made to this day …
