Sockless shoes to race in?

Any recommendations for shoes that I can race in and not have to wear socks?
right now, I train in the newton trainers
have tried to wear them without socks and they aren’t comfortable
i’m a underpronator thus looking for a performance neutral shoe.
anyone wear nike zoom skylon or lunar?

Have you had a fitting session yet.

Highly recommended by many here…

i don’t think so.
what type of fitting? from a professional tri/running store? no
My local running/tri store has some young college students doing the fittings.
I’m not sure if they know any more than me.

how do you find such a store?

Zoots are the way to go. I tried a pair of Pearlizumi on an Oly and ripped my heels apart! I use the Zoots without socks for Sprint and Oly distances but take the time in T2 at 1/2-Irons to slip on socks with my PearliZumi, which have more cushioning for the Half-Mary.

x2…Zoots up to 10k. Then socks with a shoe that has a little more cushion and support.

where are you located?
here in chicago we have a store called fleet feet, great great shop.
I’m pretty sure they’re a chain, don’t know if you have any by you.

but long story short, they will sit and talk with you about how you run, goals etc.
size you properly. watch you walk, watch you run, video you. let you run outside. bring the shoes back if you don’t like, etc etc… (it’s all free)…

thats what a good shoe fitting is.

Zoots x3, I’ve run up to 90 min in the original tempos without socks with no problems, the newer models look more sock-like but I haven’t tried any yet. The only negative to me is the cost, but I guess they are comparable to newtons in that respect. I’ve read good reports on here about the nike Lunars. I believe Rappstar races in the Lunar trainers.
I’m waiting for the K-swiss flat, it looks like a pretty seamless upper.

Zoots have done me right thus far. Only issue I have is that one particular pair tore my ankle up a little from abrasion but that lasted about two wearings and then they were fine. I have a pair of just about every flavor of their neutral trainers and racers.

Also, consider the terrain. If you are on paved roads, then going sockless is a no-brainer. However, if on trails or gravel remember that if a piece of debris gets in your shoe, then it’s going to cause major problems without a sock to protect your skin!

Also, the Zoots come with “speed laces” already installed.

I really liked the seamless uppers on Pearl Izumi shoes for going sockless. I was not crazy about the rest of the shoe after some model changes, though.

Skylon is NICE but I think you will need to use lubricant around the edges with them. Same for lunars. You might also want to check out the Nike Katana Rac3r.

Another good shoe to check out is the Puma Complete Road Racer III.

I wear the red zoots for races. They are made to run sockless and are pretty good.

Saucony Fasttwitch…they have a great liner that doesn’t rub or chafe. Tried the Zoots and didn’t like them at all, despite being suposedly made for barefoot. I only run barefoot in olympic or shorter. 1/2 or longer I take the time for socks.

does anyone know of a similiar shoe store that offers those types of fits between Houston and New Orleans?

The internet tells me that there is a fleet feet in Baton Rouge. Its a hike, but give em a call, see what kind of service they offer. theres one about an hour from me that my sister used- treadmill running, video analysis, all that junk the other guy said.

The AVI-Bolt II was designed to be worn without socks.

EDIT: The weight is incorrect on the above page (I’m looking into why this is). The actual weight is 8.5, +/- .2

sounds like a good shoe, i would like to try it

BUT, those colors! It couldn’t be any uglier.

+1 zoot

I’ve also have raced sockless in a few shorter distances (mainly olys) in nike lunar trainers.

Just lube up the inside of the shoe a little with body glide.

Zoots X whatever # it is. I used to race in the Avia and my feet got torn up. I was always weary of the Zoots as they were so light. The Ultra 2.0 & Alli’i are awesome. I have now gone sockless in half irons and up to 24mi runs. The drainage is a HUGE factor that bumps them above all others in my book as I dump a binch of water on my head. I am confident enough to sport them sockless in Kona. That said, you still gotta train sockless no matter what shoe you pick.

I just received delivery of a pair of Zoot Ultra Tempo+ 2.0. Zoot had them on sale for $50 off last week.

You may have problems with the Zoots if you tend to run on a curved last. I know I have that problem, as I train in Nike Vomero’s. Currently I wear a pair of Adidas ClimaCool Kona’s. Unfortunately, they’ve been temporarily (I hope) discontinued, but from what I understand, the ClimaCool Ozweego is pretty good too, and has the same drain system as in my Kona’s. They are a little heavier than an ultralite racing flat, but still lighter than lightweight trainers.
