Socal training jobs

Hey all,

I’m moving from the DC area to Socal, most likely in Orange County. Anybody in that area know of any personal training studios that are looking for a full-time trainer? I have my NSCA cert, NASM cert, and a BS in KNES. I can get a resume to them in a flash. I will be going out there the week between Christmas and New Years, and I’m trying to set up some interviews now, so that when I get there I can hit a few places that week. Then I am looking to make the drive the last week in Jan.

Any help is surely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Tommy Nelson

are you a former UMD-Knes graduate? I used to TA the Ex Phys lab there. Consider yourself bumped…

As a matter of fact…yes. Who did you TA for?

Small world!

I TA’d one semester for Brown, another for Lindle while I was a Master’s student. That was in 99/00 Since then, I’m a research assistant (I’m about to finish my Ph.D.). Do you remember who your instructor/TA was? I’m sure I know them.

Sorry I can’t help you with a job, but if I hear you’re having your cyclists do weight training, I’ll track you down myself. I guess this makes this post on topic

I had Lindle, but that wasn’t until 01/02. Are you in favor of cyclists weight training? I happen to be of the opinion that it helps alot, mostly for injuury prevention. There are alot of gains to be made, but most in the lab think it doesn’t help.

You must have had Mark or Dave as a TA. Did you volunteer for the VO2 max test?

As far as weight training is concerned, I don’t do it at all (I pack on muscle pretty fast), but what I said was partly in jest. Doing calf raises, squats, leg extensions, leg press, does nothing for a competitive cyclist as far as I can tell b/c of the weight gain, to say nothing of upper body work. Obviously, it’s hard to argue with a fast guy (I know you did ok in the Boonesboro TT!), but if I wanted to be in better cycling shape, I’d spend time on the bike and not at the weights. Do you have a coach?

Having said that, if you feel that ‘core work’ or whatever you want to call it helps you in preventing lower back injuries, neck problems, etc., I’d go for low-intensity high-rep stuff. Honestly, I can’t see how that would negatively affect your cycling performance, but if you swim/run, my guess is your core musculature is pretty solid anyways. If anything, I’m always worried about my hamstrings and hip flexors being too tight, so stretching that is key for me. Maylene has had some good threads going on this w/ more concrete suggestions. Look for one where The Committee/The Oracle goes into a flame war w/ her for arguments of both sides (although he is his typical enigmatic self about backing up his points). Good stuff

I am not sure if these places are hiring, but you can contact them. They are both in Orange County -

www.fitnesspatrol.com - located in Corona Del Mar

http://www.thesportsclubla.com/clubs/template.asp?Club=Irvine&section=stuff - located in Irvine.

I had some guy who was very into hockey…for the life of me I can’t remember his name. I did the vO2 test twice. Every person whose done the test there has come out with a vO2 that seems more realistic/reliable to me than anyone whose had it done at some coaching studio in Virginia which shall remain nameless.

As far as weights, I do them pretty hard, just in a very sport specific way. No more swimming/running for me, as towards the end of last season I decided to race my bike instead of trie and try and get on a pro team. Boonsboro was probably my least underwhelming performance this year!! I took it pretty hard since I did so much training specifically for thatr race, but my coach and I agreed that I had some mistakes in the week prior that left me totally flat on raceday. Brian Walton is the guy that I work with…he is an animal in his own right, and a super guy to work with.

I’ve followed the posts on weight before, just usually waiting for Rick Stern to chime in that weight don’t help. However, I know differently based on personal experience, especially with injury prevention. If you are using them in a sport specific way (movements that mimic pedal stroke, etc) they definately help your riding.

Thanks for the bump! Hopefully I can land a job out there…the market should be better there than in DC. DC isn’t too bad, but in Socal the rates are higher, demand is higher, etc. Plus the weather doesn’t suck.

BTW, I’m also looking for an elite team to ride for out there as well. Anyone have any leads?

Tommy

are u looking more for sport performance or “personal training”? are u a cscs, pes or cpt?

I have connections in sport perfromance only - may help to go to the nsca sport specific conf in louisville or the one in az (athletic perfromance with verstegen & boyle) to hook up with others in the field.

let me know and i will get u some names/numbers.

good luck and i wish i were going back too! (i am from huntington beach)

I am a cpt right now, finishing up my pes. One of the studios I work in right now is big into NASM, which I find I like more approach-wise than NSCA, so I decided to go with that rather than CSCS. Not to say that I wouldn’t do it, but at 500 a pop, I can’t do it all right now. I really would rather be working more with athletes though, instead of housewives. Not that there is anything wrong with housewives, I just need to apply ny practical knowledge better. I would love some contact info if you want to PM me.

Thanks in advance,
