And in the Auburn fire, it looks like Brad Kearns has lost his storage unit with race supplies, but he, the family and home are fine. Hope everyone in all the fires are out of danger.
I’m right next to the Yucaipa fire and about 30 miles east of the big one in the San Gabriels. I can tell you right now I normally don’t think about cancelling training but my last two runs I could feel the smoke I was breathing in.
To top it off its in the mid 100’s and in the mid 90’s at 8 pm. Suffice to say my run times are far from impressive.
We were up in Penticton this weekend volunteering, cheering and registering for 2010. As soon as we stepped out of the airport returning home today the air smelled quite smoky. The big fire is about 50 or 60 miles west of us above the Pasadena/La Canada area. Yesterday a couple more fires started up about 10 miles to the East of us in Yucaipa. We are down in the city of Redlands so are not threatened by the fires.
I’m sure Monty and Dan are dealing with a lot of smoke as well but the fires don’t seem to be threatening their location right now.
I’m in Glendora just below the smaller of the two fires displayed on the map in one of the previous posts. The fire is only 2000 + acres is 95% contained. I’m really not sure what “contained” means, but they are going through the area “mopping” up! Highway 39 and Glendora Mountain Road are the east and west parameters of that fire.
The East flank of the “Station Fire” that has burned over 120,000 acres is heading in our direction, but it is fairly deep into the mountain range. We are getting a lot of smoke and ash. We are now hearing that full containment of the Station Fire may be as late as September 15th, but that all depends upon the weather.
I’ve lived in California for over 40 years and haven’t seen a fire this bad! My hat off to the firefighters. They are working in some horrendous conditions in 100 plus heat!
Thanks! It seems like California may be getting a majority of the press about these fires, but other states are also experiencing their problems. Got an e-mail from my sister in Arizona! She has been evacuated due to a fire up in the Payson, AZ area. The fire is 50% or 60% contained and the fire appears to be headed away from the homes in that area…thank goodness! Again, it is the fire fighters that did a great job along with the 200 yard plus brush clearance that my brother-in-law, nephew and sister worked on for months after the house was built.
Hopefully I didn’t speak too soon. Just saw a newer fire map and there is an extension of the fire heading towards xantusia. Not there yet, but I hope it doesn’t continue to grow in Dan and Monty’s direction.
