and 2. There are talented younger athletes out there, but few have enough time to “really train.” Your forty-five plus crowd (just my observation) tends to have more financial security and more flexible work schedules. Younger athletes still do great at running (though, there are less studs) and are still kicken in the pool. (any objections can take it up with Mr. Phelps.) Those sports in general don’t take as much time to train for.
Not entirely true, really, look at all the top American’s in the Tour, first time ever that there has been this saturation (Armstrong, Hincapie, Julich, Leipheimer, Landis, Horner) … all under 35 yrs old

True, but mainly these 30-ish yr old guys are raising families … leaving the 30-ish year old free-wheeling “family-free” guys out there to put there time into training and racing fast. Many more married/children bound 30 year old American males than single 30-sh year old endurance athletes. Once you hit the 50s and the kids are out, you have nothing but time to train, I would assume.
Robic is crazy. He actually gets quite a bad rep in our home country of Slovenia, for the way he acts towards his road crews during races…I say who cares, he’s a phenomenal long-distance cyclist. You’d think the press could give him more credit for his achievements and not his personality. Perhaps a not very gracious person, but definitively focused and fast. He’s a true badass.
