So what did he do?: Army four-star general relieved of command

Army four-star general relieved of command

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Army, in a rare disciplinary act against a four-star officer, said Tuesday it relieved Gen. Kevin P Byrnes of his command after an investigation into unspecified “personal conduct.”

Byrnes was relieved as commander of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command on Monday by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker, according to a brief statement issued by Army headquarters at the Pentagon.

In that post, Byrnes oversaw all Army training programs and the development of war-fighting guidelines.

Although disciplinary action against general officers is not uncommon, it is extremely rare for a four-star general to be relieved of command. Byrnes held the position as commander of Training and Doctrine Command since November 2002. Before that he was director of the Army staff at Army headquarters in the Pentagon.

“The investigation upon which this relief is based is undergoing further review to determine the appropriate final disposition of this matter,” the Army statement said.

A spokesman for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Bryan Whitman, said the investigation involved “matters of personal conduct,” but he would not say more.

The deputy commander of Training and Doctrine Command, Lt. Gen. Anthony R. Jones, has been designated the acting commander, following the action against Byrnes, Army spokesman Paul Boyce said.

The spokesman said it was an Army policy not to release information about specific allegations in an investigation of an Army officer.

In April the Pentagon announced that Lt. Gen. William Wallace had been nominated for a fourth star and assignment as commander of Training and Doctrine Command to succeed Byrnes, but he has not yet been confirmed by the Senate. There was no public indication at the time that Byrnes was under investigation.

So am I reading that correctly…William Wallace will now be in charge of training our soldiers?

Will our boys be painting their arses blue, wearing skirts and mooning the enemy in the next war we get into?

Don’t know for sure, but from the sound of it probably something like fraternization or sexual harassment–e.g., having an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate or making inappropriate comments, unwelcome advances, etc.

Our senior military (officer and enlisted) are usually (always) removed/demoted/drummed out if caught doing the same thing their former commander-in-chief did.

Maybe he deserted his post like the current Commander in Chief did?

What a joke. Clinton can get blow jobs in the office but his subordinates get kicked out in disgrace and lose their pensions if the same or lesser is done.

What a double standard.

yeah its a joke alright. Bush can go AWOL from his national guard post and snort cocaine for a couple of years instead of doing his duty and he gets an honorable discharge!..even after he was grounded for failing to take a mandatory drug test!

I agree with you Brian 100% on this one, what a terrible double standard.

Do you want to revise your stance on lying to the grand jury, while you’re in the neighborhood?

Actually, Matt. Bush’s military records show that he served and was honorably discharged from the service and fulfilled his obligation. What record’s state your claim?

Oh yeah…lying to a federal grand jury and looking right into the camera on national television and categorically stating “I never had sexual relations with that woman.”
.

And what did Bush do repeatedly during his first campaign for President?

Journalist: Mr. Bush have you ever taken cocaine?

Bush: Next question please.

And as for lying to grand juries, Bush refused to even testify before the 9/11 Commission which had grand jury powers knowing that if he lied he could face the same fate as Clinton…he invited a few select members over for coffee instead on his lawyer’s advice.

Never ceases to amaze me how ruffled tou guys get about a guy cheating on his wife and lying about it…ITS A PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER…GET OVER IT…MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

It was a private matter until he decided to lie to a federal grand jury.

He lied under oath in a deposition, not before a grand jury. Minor distinction but an important one to make. Also, in my line of work I see people lying in depositions all day, everyday. Just stating a fact, not defending Clinton, although I agree, it was a family matter.

What is your position on using cocaine while on flight duty? private or public?

Could you point us to the official service records that report this event. Doctored ones from Dan Rather don’t count.

That Document was released by the White House Brian.

Based on this article, the suspension of flying status is a matter of official air force record or whatever code words you need to make it legit.

Bush was honorably discharged and fulfilled his duties as an officer in the armed forces. What does that have to do with the fact that Clinton lied under oath and impeached from the office of President of the United States?

As a pilot the thing that bothers me the most is that he was ordered to take a flight physical, he refused and was grounded. This is inconceivable to me. All that hard work, not to mention the joy of flying, gone just because he refused to take a simple physical.

Way to move those goal posts Brian! You asked to point to some official service records that discussed Bush’s flight suspension and I dutifully complied. Now you are changing the subject. Good work! That conservative playbook really comes in handy.

double standard - yes and no

we, uniformed personnel, all fall under the uniform code of military justice, where as our civilian higher-ups do not. the UCMJ has a lot of things that you don’t find in civilian law or isn’t really prosecuted anymore such as “conduct unbecoming” or “adultery”

lately most of the GO relief for causes have been due to “zipper problems” or “TDY expenditures.” unless it’s been really F’d up (i.e. BG Hale case) these guys are all gettgin pushed out minus a star or two but still leave with a retirement.

When GEN WAllace was the CDR of Combined-Arms Center he came to talk to our staff-college class or 1100 majors. nobody ever took up the double-dog dare of standing up wiht half their face painted blue and screaming “FREEDOM!!!”
