So the slowdown in the economy has affect your tri club

The meetings at my tri club are huge this year. Its at least a 5 times increase over the last 4 months. We had to move to larger quarters for meetings.

The slowdown has helped our club.

I think you are going to find the number of participants on the local scene may be growing as people look to find ways to relieve stress. On the other side of the coin, many people who are already in the sport or getting into it will spend less on equipment this year. I know the local shops in our area aren’t quite as busy as they had been, but as the sheer numbers grow it keeps them going.

Same thing, we are breaking the record by our number of member this year ! (and most have zero experience in Tri and endurance sport)
But as you said, even in Canada, we’ll see less $$$toys and more 2nd hand bikes at spring…

mumm good idea, we should do a pool in our club about the motivation of the Rookies.

Perhaps a lot of people finally have time to train… that’s my situation. I’m still working, but I do contract work, so I have a lot of free time these days.

That’s great news. Thanks for sharing that with us.

I can tell you that at TriFest, I had a number of conversations with a number of key insiders in the Tri business and over all I would say most are very optimistic with a dash of caution and realism about what is going on right now. We would be silly to say that their will be no impact, but overall things look pretty good.

Triathlon has been on an unprecedented growth spurt for the past 5 years - recent poll here on ST confirmed that. My sense is that the numbers were fairly accurate and the key thing for me was that close to half of the people who responded to the poll had been in the sport 5 years or less. Reading furthet into that the size of the triathlon population has almost doubled in the past 5 years! That is impressive growth!
