So, tell me - what are you wearing?

No, it’s not a cheezy 1-900 line come-on (not that there’s anything wrong with that)

But now that you’re reading this, what would you wear if you were doing a long course race (A-Z Du) and the expected weather was:

Rain

Hi 53°F

If it were warmer, then it wouldn’t be an issue - standard Tri stuff (you’d be wet coming outta the water anyway…)

Tights are a given. As are long sleeves of some sort (rather than arm warmers, which to me imply that they might get taken off, and at these temps I doubt it).

Figger road shoes vs. tri so I can fit in a pair of wool socks. Mebbe toe booties? Long finger gloves.

What ideas or suggestions do you ST’ers have for doing a race in these “interesting” conditions?? How would you ‘dress for success’?

tight low rise jeans, black cowboy boots and a black house of blues t-shirt.

oh for the race?

Instead of tights I’d go with leg warmers, easier to put on/take off for run. I’d do the l/s top for sure, and you may want at least wind-breaking vest for the bike, if not a jacket. Woolie boolies for the bike. Being long course, toe covers would be nice. I’d go with full gloves, I’d probably wear something like the sugoi running gloves, then you can keep them on for the run if you’d like. Toque for the run is an option.

Since I live in Canada and love racing in the cold, I’d have a l/s jersey/wifebeater combo; knee warmers, woolie boolie socks, no toe covers, sugoi running gloves for the ride.

It all depends on wind and your tolerance for cold.

Yes, I see my plan of trisuit plus maybe a light short-sleeve top going out the window…

I think I will be trisuit (cause I find it comfy)
Arm-warmers (cause I might get hot during the run)
Gloves with fingers
Road shoes are a given on 85 miles of biking
Extra jerseys
Long sleeve in transition
Multiple socks
Multiple shoes

JM said we could have special needs, so I’m hoping I can deposit one at the bike aid station…

Also will be bringing foul weather tires.

I will also be happy in my LG Rocket, since it is warm. Not so nice on hot days, but good for days like this one… Head = warm is good…

A raincoat and a scarf … or better yet, a bathrobe while I drink my coffee and read the paper. Do you actually enjoy racing in the rain when it’s 53F?

Running in weather like this is typically not a problem, once you get going it’s not bad. Cycling though can be a challenge.

I would suggest

  • under shirt

  • cycling jersey

  • tight fitting wind vest( that can be zipped on/off easily and stuffed in/out of back pocket)

  • arm-warmers

  • tri or cycling shorts

  • Knee warmers

-cycle shoe covers/boots

You will get wet, but body heat will keep driving moisture out through the tech fabrics that you are wearing.

I would wear shorts, ride the trainer and watch football.

Pics or it didn’t happen

Jeffh - sure, why not? Of course, when I signed up, I envisioned a nice crisp clear Fall day, leaves turning, sun shining, light breeze… like it was the rest of this week. Not gonna back out now… “There is no bad weather, there is only bad clothing” - Russian proverb

My biggest dilemna is upper body. Will probably stick w/ L/S something or other as a base layer, since I don’t foresee wanting bare arms, even on the run (so the armwarmers are out then too, even tho in general I use 'em all the time).

I’ll just bring it all. Lotsa room in the pack since I won’t have a wetsuit.

Any recommendations for a good vest? I may be picking one up today or tomorrow… Everything else, I got…

Blankie.

J-

I was on the “quest for the perfect vest” for several seasons. What I finally ended up with (and like, a lot) is the LG Atmos (I had to look up the model name, I’m not that RainMan) vest. See it here:

Dunno if ya can find this or something like it in the next day or 2, but happy shopping anyway. No vest is gonna be as aero as a jersey (there’s gonna be some inherent flapping no matter how small ya size it), but this is the bestest vest I’ve found so far.

I think if I get a vest, it will be size like XS or something. I hate the flapping…

Just getting used to my first winter after years of living in the Tropics… the cold is hard to begin with!

Here’s what I’m into for the cold:

  • Base layer (Turtleneck short sleeve)
  • Short Sleeve Jersey
  • Windstopper Vest
  • Arm Warmers
  • Tights
  • Toe Covers

I don’t go down the multiple sock route because it makes my shoes tight when my feet swell. I do like a light beanie or ear warmer under my helmet though.

Layering is the go because you can start warm and then remove items when it warms up a bit. Keeps your core at the same level to improve performance. Leg warmers are a good option for that too!

I personally don’t go for gloves other than fingerless because my hands get so hot no matter what the weather that I get uncomfortable.

Sugoi used to make one called the Transition vest - essentially a sleeve-less version of their very popular Transition jacket( a must have for cold weather cycling). It’s a full zip, wind proof fabric on the front and shoulders, lined, with three pockets in the back and it fits tight to the body. I have one and I use it for everying - running, cycling, xc-skiing, warming up for races etc . .
