So I'm in San Diego

… for a conference. Staying on Pacific Hwy about a mile from the ballpark and the convention center.

Any tips by local residents on good non-touristy food? Don’t have a car, or much time. I walked thru the gaslight district today and it seemed pretty pricey and tacky at times.

So are there any San Diegans out there willing to give up some secrets? I want some good mole while I’m here!

Thanks!

Josef

nice weather, eh?

You are not too far from Little Italy, good food there.

AMAZING dessert place…

Ask most locals they could tell you where it is.

Not from SD, but the Yard House has great food and a good atmosphere.

thanks Gary! I’m really close to LI - any specific place you can recommend?

It’s close to 20 degrees warmer in Boston than in San Diego. That’s just weird.

damn, that looks good! thanks! keep 'em coming! How about some great hole in the wall mexican place? Sushi/seafood

Filippi’s, 1747 India St.

For Sushi, I only reccomend Todai off the 8 and Texas (cab ride)

I have not been to this one, but: http://www.indigogrill.signonsandiego.com/1.html
.

Todai? There has never, in the history of the world, been decent food served at a buffet. I’ve been forced to sit through far more meals at Todai then I care to remember. Sorry, gotta go against you on that one.

Try Mr. Sushi in PB, not that it’s downtown. Can’t help with downtown much, other than a couple times I mostly at ate Horton Plaza there.

dude, I’m a first-timer in town. The plane I was on barely found the airport. Having said that: what’s PB? Thanks! keep 'em coming!

Not far from you, just west is Hillcrest. A high end restaurant is Mr. A’s. A great place to get some creative cuisine is Kemo Sabe’s. Get the Skirts on Fire, and then thank the Gods.

PB = Pacific Beach, just slightly north and west of you.

They didn’t give you the code?
PB = Pacific Beach…surfer area north of downtown and west of Mission Bay.
OB = Ocean Beach
TJ = Tijuana
El Cajon = El Cahone phonetically, don’t say El Cajun like a cross between a Louisiana French and a Spaniard. La Jolla = La hoya.

You should be able to get by with that

There was an okay place just north of the tall ship Star of India, I think it is called Arthurs, decent food for a decent price and great location.

If you were to venture to Todai, which is in Mission Valley, Hi Tech Bikes is in the area. The other cool bike shops are in the north beach towns.

Get over to old town, There are about 10 -15 great Mexican restaurants, Old town Mex. Café / bar (where Clinton ate)— Guadalajara (out by the street / caltrans building). They have big margaritas and those Mariachis play requests ,even locals go there . Its safe you can walk around at night ,

If your not hungry just have a beer / chips / Salsa, It can be a meal in its self.

They just screwed it up with some bonehead - lowest bid - mega restaurant operator, got the concession, they are changing over ,remodeling .

Casa de bandini was perfect, now it’s a cosmopolitan restaurant; it looks like a western cook out with furniture made of 2-x4 s . Its just about money ,

IB-Imperial Beach!

I was just there last week and found a great little restaurant with awesome fish tacos. Dont’ remember the name but it’s across the street from the convention center, toward the ball park.

Some great local eateries –

Phils BBQ - SD’s best BBQ

Hash House a Go Go - great American “farm” food - gigantic portions

Downtown Fish Joint - (Lunch Only) Grilled Seafood and great fish tacos

Point Loma Seafoods - Even Better Fish Tacos

Jasmine or Emerald - Dim Sum

Bandar - Middle Eastern Food

Rei do Gado - Brazilian churrasqueria - Food is good, but experience is better

Italian Sausage in Little Italy - not sure of the name, but great local experience. They only have a few sandwiches and soft drinks in a can. It is on the West side of the main street toward the northern side. You will have to ask someone in Little Italy to point you in the right direction.

Corvette Diner - Enjoyable 50s atmosphere pretty good food.

If you have not gone to one, then you may want to try an In and Out Burger or a Fat Burger. Not local to SD, but a SoCal experience.

If you want nicer food, let me know and I will recommend some others.

Places to Run:

Rancho Santa Fe. Excellent wood chip loop around the golf course. There are other nice trails in the area but you would need someone to show you the way. Lots of people are out there for the Sunday long run.

Lake Hodges (Inland North County). Park across the street from North County Mall. Turn right like you are going to the driving range and continue on to where the road dead ends. (About 1/4 mi) Head east on the trail for a flat run, west for some hills. Well marked. Trail is seven miles in west direction. Not sure how far in east direction, but more than enough.

UCSD: Nice track and cross country course in La Jolla area.

Swimming:

Open Water: La Jolla Cove.

Masters Swimming: Carlsbad HS 6:00 AM or noon. La Jolla High School, the name of the program is swim smarter. www.swimsmarter.com.

Good food:

Los Olas- Solana Beach. Next to Ki’s. Never been there but heard it’s good.

Ki’s in Solana Beach. Great stir fry, salmon. Has a little bit of everything. Can’t beat the ocean view either.

Oggies Pizza- Excellent pizza and salads. They give you a lot.

Rubios- On every street. Got to try it.

What, I’m supposed to work out? Thanks all for the great advice, and keep it coming!

I am about to hop out onto the boardwalk or whatever that is out in front of my hotel, since the gym in this place doesn’t have a bike in it. Dang. Just when I was getting ready to dominate…

I was there 2 years ago. Very good. My idiot wife ordered a steak quesadilla with the carne asada on the side.

How are they remodelling it??? I hope they’re not taking out the Dia de Los Muertos wedding scene display.
