So did Craig Alexander know he was close to the course record?

During the live broadcast I never saw them get that answered. When he grabbed the flag and was celebrating before the finish, did he know the course record was so close?

You are bringing back terrible memories of spending eight hours listening to Michellie Jones. I have being working hard to erase them too. In answer to ‘that’ question: Probably and his pre-finish celebrations cost him about 2 seconds so who cares.

I decided he did. After he grabbed the flag, I kept wondering why he didn’t display it–he just kept it folded up in his hand (at one point using it to dab sweat from his brow). My friend who I was watching with pointed out that he probably knew how close he was to the record and decided against it.

Also, if he really didn’t know, I don’t think he would have pushed himself to the point of collapse.

In one of the post race interviews, he said he didn’t realize he was close to the record until the very end, and then he did a “little sprint” to get under the record.

Yes, he was told repeatedly from mile 22 on. He stopped a few times to stretch his hamstrings and really dug deep the last 5km to stay on pace.

It doesn’t look like he knew until the last 100 yards or so. He did slow down to celebrate until he saw the time and started sprinting.

Absolutely. For the entire race, there is a huge clock with the race time on it directly in front of the race leader. It’s hard to really calculate what the time means until you get on the run, but I’d be certain he had an idea, and I’m sure that people were telling him for quite a while from the sidelines. I’d be shocked if he didn’t know it from at least the turnaround at the Energy Lab, if not well before then.

I know they never answered it in the broadcast, but I’m sure he knew for a good portion of the run. I think when he started to cramp he knew what his limits were and ran right at that probably thinking it was slipping away, but not wanting to push it and lose the win. Then 100 yards from the finish he realized he could still do it and because he’d chilled a bit in the previous 1/2 mile went for it.

Yes he knew. Everyone was screaming to him about it. When he stopped to stretch his legs (two or three times), everyone gasped with fear that he would stop running because he was cramping.

I’ll take Michellie over Lisa Bentley any day. Although they are both pretty bad announcers. Lisa was just screaming into the mic the whole time in 2010.

They need to bring in John Madden for next year.

that, or something like it, is a good idea.

Welch and Lieto do a fine job as pro-athlete announcers.

person number 3 should be a pro announcer announcer

hard to take a bus to Hawaii.

LOL.

Good point.

I suppose he could park his bus on an ocean going barge.

It would take awhile, but it would be some sight on the Queen K.

Joe Rogan FTW!

joe rogan would be pretty interesting

when craig pulled up with cramps he woulda gone

“CRAIG JUST GOT ROCKED!!!”
.

I think a viable replacement is to keep it in America and get Ann Wessling on board, surely no one would oppose that!

Rogan and Madden would be comedy gold. We could add SPEED F1 Commentator David Hobbs to the mix, too. Every time he says “kerblammo!” everybody drinks.

No, they need Don Cherry.

Dude, imagine the damage Liggett and Sherwen could do for 8 hours. Epic…
